right now the 3g can be unlocked and jailbroken but the 3gs can only be jailbroken when ultrasnow comes out the 3gs can be unlocked could be a week or a month till ultrasnow comes out though i believe the unlocker is called redsnow but not totally sure because i've never had an iphone just know about it for future reference

There's something you should be aware of though.

You can get an iPod touch 60GB or whatever (in other words, a ton more music space), for the same price as that phone.

iPod touches can be jailbroken and pretty much work like iPhones, just without the phone part.

If you're looking at a store ad and they say "iPhone for $99", that's the iPhone 3G and it's $99 only if you sign up for a three-year contract. If you want an iPhone to use just as an iPod, you'll have to buy one used. Brand new at retail without a contract, iPhones cost $700 and up. You'd spend far less buying a brand new iPod Touch.

Just look for a used iPhone or iPod Touch and try to find a good deal. I seriously doubt you'd find somebody selling a used iPhone, even the original 2G one, for less than $200. I sold my 2G for $250 recently and had a ton of responses to the ad. Sold my 3G for $350 and even more responses. All that money was put towards my 3GS.

look online for one. I just got a brand new 16GB 3G for $600AUD where in the shops they are $800+

I have a 2G 8B for sale for $400AUD. The site I'm selling it on have 3 all the same for that price so it will sell, just have to wait for a buyer.

Oh, BTW, yea they all can be unlocked/jailbreaked now. The one I'm selling is all done.

Need to know something fast, if I get a iPhone (not 3G or 3G S) can I unlock it so I don't need to use a carrier (Rogers, Bell, Fido, etc)? I see it's on sale for $99CAD new somewhere... I want it for playing my music on the go, don't need a new phone.

Couldn't I just go to a US Apple Store, pick up a locked iPhone 3G and jailbreak it? That way I get a $100 iPod Touch.

The cheap prices are possible due to the contracts you sign at a carrier...so you won't get a 100$ iPhone if you don't sign a contract which is expensive...
