This is just a suggestion. How about putting the link to the forum in the GBATemp banner in the homepage? That way it's seen by clearly by everyone who enters the site. Believe me I didn't notice the forums link at the side. Actually it took me about a week to notice it. I thought the only way to get into the forum was through the recent topic posts on the side.

Yes, well It didn't take me that long to figure out how to get into the forums but I didn't notice it untill a day or so after I joined.
