Homebrew Installing Pokemon Rom Hacks

I recently downloaded Pokemon Nightmare Moon(an Ultra Moon Hack) and I want to know if I have to have Ultra Moon on my 3ds to use it?
I got Ultra Moon game cartridge and have ripped the CIA off of it so I'm just wondering.

If it is a .Cia just install it. Though it is possible that the rom hack and the legit game both have the same titleid. In that case you can't have both installed so make sure to backup your save data.

It isn't a .cia.
The hack came in a roms/exefs folder.

In that case you need to use Luma LayerdFS with patching enabled.

Can I load a hack onto a cartridge?
Or is it just the system?

Good question. Looking at the guide it says nothing about cart vs installed title so I would think it would work just fine. Give it a try and report back.

So it worked on installed and cartridge.
Which is pretty cool.

The hack isn't loaded onto the cart, it's loaded from the SD card but it will work with carts too.

Just want to mention that it will use the same save file as the original game, so if you want a separate save for the hack, install the other version of the game and use that instead. Or if the hack is only for Moon, you can move your existing save to Sun instead.
You can patch a CIA to use a different title ID if you want to have both Moon and the Moon hack.
