Yesterday Sony Computer Entertainment Poland published some new screenshots of "inFamous: Second Son" on their Facebook page. Seeing that we don't have a PlayStation 4 section yet, I'm going to post them here, in the USN. Not sure if those have surfaced elsewhere before, but I thought they're well-worth a peek. As you all know, the game is one of PlayStation 4's launch titles. Looks pretty nifty to me! Enjoy!

You know, people have been saying that for ages now, and they're wrong every time. I'm sure people will be saying it again when the next generation rolls around.

Well this has taken time because since crysis 2 till now, I haven't seen a 'leap' in graphics. uncharted 2 and 3 impressed me with their details while assassin's creed with its environment and accuracy.

To be fair you are comparing it against a device that has remained the same in terms of processing power for years and was built upon 2006 or earlier vintage hardware.

Environment and accuracy is more a function of game design as well rather than graphics. 2000 saw Deus Ex and a pretty accurate recreation of Liberty Island.

This looks really nice. Are those in-game graphics, or CG-cutscene graphics?

Looks to be gameplay, I remember reports saying that the presentation during the PS4 reveal was all in-game graphics and not prerendered as well. Don't quote me on that though.

inFamous 2 was an excellent game, the first game was pretty mediocre (it can best be described as "fun" but with some pretty bad or boring design decisions at times). Seeing as I don't see them going backwards in terms of design I think Second Son will be pretty damn awesome.

Cutscene or not, what you're seeing is in-game footage as the engine renders it. The game will actually look better than this since the screenshots have been downscaled from HD down for whatever reason.

there is a limit on how good the graphics can reach. I think that limit has been crossed.
That "limit" is absolute photorealism, and we're nowhere near there yet.

More like worse since downscaling the image removes all artifacts and any aliasing that may present.

Resizing, be it upwards or downwards has a detrimental effect of image quality. It's not vector-based graphics - it's a screenshot. Scale it down and you (naturally) cut down the pixel count, plus the compression to .png or .jpg introduces artifacts of its own (which can be seen on the pictures).

That being said, I see what you mean, except it sort of works both ways. ;)

If I remember correctly, the engine sucker punch made was guessing at how good the ps4 was going to be. They haven't expressed any concerns about porting it to actual ps4 hardware but it is still not running on actual ps4 specs yet. These visuals are probably subject to change but it wouldn't surprise me much if they didn't, either.

For me, that's what I look for in graphics. Graphics should reflect the real world and point out the more 'taken for granted' things with a wow effect.

For example, uncharted 2 was quite simple but everything they drew or kept on the screen made sense and could be seen even during an intense battle. From U3, in the bar, you could tell what was on the wall and in the washroom and how everything broke and moved.
Being crystal clear and sharp is nice but doesn't impress for long like the witcher 2; very high level of detail and texture quality from the grass coloring to the face freckles. It's nice but you can't see it all the time.

Therefore I haven't seen that leap on any system be it ps3 or pc or whatever. I have seen something like it from watchdogs where the water reflections and dusty roads really bring out the environment.

Also, originality. When I saw metro last light, wasn't impressed much. It's the same all quality and effects and focus on hq clothing for army personnel. But when I see something like assassin's creed, I see how everything is moving and its a live city. From the animals to the people to the beautiful beautiful weather.

Then again, everyone has a different angle on graphics.

You can pry the abstract art, cel shading and such like out of the my cold dead hands and you had better also be wary of my going undead afterwards.

Get a bigger screen/better eyes?

Assassin's creed living cities.... though I do not doubt such things partially troubled the graphics engine at some level that seems to be more of a function of game AI than any one graphics trick.

"water reflections"
It depends really, I am somewhat versed in fluid dynamics and light physics so I tend to just the see the massive errors in such things. This is for good reason as both of them are hideously complex to calculate or even fake well (the maths has been around for decades, the supercomputers are just now catching up).

I do agree most of the graphics advancements of the last few years have happened under the hood and most of the newer ones will probably come from better animations, better AI (which in some ways does depend upon the graphics engines) and

for me graphics are 'images displayed by a computer'. Be it through AI or quality or calculations... anything can be part of the graphic.
It's not about having a big screen, I've seen games on the psp that look better than on the wii. It's not because the wii is not powerful or whatnot but its the work put it making full use of the image that is presented to the user.

Graphics are not always about being 'right'. How many games have blood flying all over the place or parts just dropping off (like prototype 2)? Sometimes its good and sometimes its silly. Take for example prototype 2, I couldn't play it well on my pc at 1080p with the stuttering. However after playing tomb raider, I loved it more and it worked much better due to its beauty and drawings as you mentioned.

I feel the developers have relied too much on the graphics processors playtime processing (if you get me). Things like tessellation and others that require the LATEST graphics card to process the game although without much seen as the output. For example, metro last light again, what I see is not what I expected. have the devs focus on making better textures and ideas on the players and graphics over having the gpu overworked.

People were saying that graphics can't get better than PS3/360.
Trust me, graphics are going to go way beyond this.

To me they haven't gone ahead of the ps3 and 360 yet. Of course I'm not versed in the graphics arena so I should be wrong.

I think you're mixing up graphics and aesthetics.

An interesting watch on the subject.

very nice, then again... its how I see a game although it may not be the official/formal understanding of the public. I just putting both words as one. I think aesthetics is better put as artistic value of the graphics as the comments said.

then again, what would u say environmental effects are? graphics or aesthetics. To me, i believe what he has said in the video is very accurate.

devs should focus on both and not just graphics. graphic deving can be learnt and implemented but aesthetics is about your exp, skills and ideas put into practice

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
