I remember switching the cmos battery (didn't work), but the jumper thingy is new to me.

actually, booting without a battery works just as well

the battery just makes sure all the BIOS settings stay set when the system is powered down, otherwise they'd have to be configured each boot.

yes and booting without a any source of keeping the settings (cmos) active will clear cmos on loads of motherboards.
removing a battery doesn't instantly clear cmos. booting without a battery sure does

true lulwut.. either one (jumper swap and boot or battery removal and boot) would do the same thing and wipe out all settings..
the safer way would be to remove the batt because the jumper is hard to find sometimes and u might be jumping something else.. unless it says cmos or bios or reset or something like that (usually next to the batt itself as 3 pins with 2 jumped already) u cant know forsure unless u see the motherboard manual..

Sorry that all this is off topic, but pulling the battery is not always so easy on a laptop. I've had MANY laptops where you have to dissemble the whole thing to just get to the damn battery.
