Yeah, I actually closed the account completely. My main concern is them taking all of my personal info and using it for something that could harm me in the future. I am contemplating changing my last name. Would that fix it? (And yes, I know that is a drastic measure, but I don't really like my last name anyway
wink.gif
)

And thanks for all of the help guys. I asked about this on GameFAQs, and over 75% of the replies were either laughing at me or just not helpful in any way. This really shows a lot about the members of GBAtemp.

Changing your name wont help at all. There's millions of people with the exact same name as yours. Unless your name is like Urgetfet Yusuertiok.

Actually, there are 6 people in the US with my name.

I still doubt they'll do anything. I mean if you got an email, that eans millions of others got the email. It could just be an over used scam site.

your new to the 419 scam aren't you?

they send thousands of these but obviously only a few people answer them, that minority is enough to make this scam profitable. There are tons of variations of this same scam like the ebay email scam which is very similar to yours.

Edit: Two articles mentioning your scam

http://www.thetaoofmakingmoney.com/2006/12/06/140.html

The 419 scams had to do when people would buy stuff from them and get there money or vice versa. Also, they lived in Nigeria. Spanish isn't even a tongue n Nigeria, let alone the core basis of Africa.

Spain/Mexico > Nigeria

419 has become a generic name for these types of scams, doesn't matter where they originate.

This is a serious topic. If you do not have anything to contribute to help me, then please leave.

These are serious times, and we need serious people..."

And the thing now, is that they have my personal information. My name, social security, address, etc. And when I checked the source of the fraud page, it turned out to be a spanish web site. This might be a scam to get information to give to the illegal aliens into America so that they can steal another person's identity for their own uses. What can I do to prevent this from happening?Â

Okay, so the site was in Spanish. I'm really curious as to why your train of thought immediately jumped to illegal aliens. If you have a healthy, unprejudiced mind, there is a huge disconnect in your logic. Isn't it much more likely that a random tech-savy thief in a Spanish speaking country was trying to steal your money? Not gain access into your precious swiss-cheese-border protected country?

Just wanted you to kow that with your "illegal aliens" comment, my opinion of your post went from "this guy may be an internet moron, but I hope he doesn't lose any money" to "I hope the Spanish speaking thief in any one of hundreds of countries OTHER THAN MEXICO ruins this moron's credit."

Essentially, I think you have bigger problems than the fact that you aren't smart enough to have an online account with anyone. Best of luck to you.

All I gotta say is:

1) You will never EVER be able to catch the people that got your info by spamming these mails.

2) Do NOT worry. They needed all that info for a reason and that reason is NOT identity theft. They planned to use it for fraud or cash them out themselves. Really, all they are after is your cash, but since you acted ASAP, NOTHING will happen.

I'm not saying this to comfort you, this is the actual truth, so I hope you'll sleep better from now on

What the hell are you talking about?

I can understand that you're trying to "comfort" him, but don't lie to the man. You can easily trace where the IP of the email came from, if using a proxy, they can just check the actual IP by searching the data sent through, and where it came from.

Dude...I don;t need to say anything about the 2nd one It's obviously false.

Hahaha, I'm sorry sir, but I probably got way more experience on this matter than you do

. They don't use normal proxies, they use socks 5 which are not traceable back to the IP it originated from. They are hosted on hosting space and on a domain that both have been paid for with frauded credit cards. Why the fuck you think they would steal your identity? As long as your name is still in the .gov databases and not stating you are dead, they can't do shit with it. But then again, they don't even use it for that.

He DID suffer for a MISTAKE, anyone can commit one, you me and him. The only thing he is asking is a little advice.
I knew I would see a comment like yours here, I mean, I know man, I'm a spanish speaking "alien" here in this country, but that doesn't means I truly wish the guy the worst or that I call him a retard.

I think his initial thinking is actually correct merely on possibilities, El Salvador has aprox. 35% of its actual population living here in the US. And that is one of the smallest Caribbean countries. I mean, there is nothing wrong with just facing the facts.
I know that many Americans ARE xenophobics, but that doesn't mean we are going to do the same thing just because of someone's comment.

Still, I agree with some of your points, it would be so refreshing to think that you are a native american and still think the way you do, I truly don't think you are attacking the guy, I just found interested opinions to comment about your post.
A healthy, unprejudiced mind is the one that can realize that we are all human beings, with the same fears and hopes, and we all can still fuck up from time to time.
