Gaming I got linux~

it looks really different, and has a much different feel in comparison to Windows 7.
now i just feel like moving that "feel" to Ubuntu so i can enjoy linux with that Windows 7 feel.

that means...
fonts.

what directory are they in or where can i download them?
if they are illegal or are not allowed to be discussed, PM me then

anyway... since i am already making this thread,
applications i should be getting/are a must?

The Ubuntu wiki has information on how to add new fonts (and a lot more too if you're interested). I've never done it myself because I am quite happy with the basic fonts, but I suppose it isn't that difficult (even though it may look like it is). EDIT: it isn't difficult at all, I tried installing the font used on the GBAtemp banner and it was easy!

As for apps, get:

VLC media player/amaroK (obviously, media players)
Google Chrome (still in beta but it works)
OpenOffice (but that's included with the Ubuntu package IIRC)
Cheese! (webcam photo and video recording software; again, I think this one's already included)
GIMP (like Photoshop)
Pidgin (all-in-one messenger service)
Skype
Wine (to use most Windows programs if you still wish to do so)
DropBox (easy yet hard to explain, here's the site with an introduction video)

That's all for me, other people might be able to suggest more things. I don't really use my computer for anything else than these things.

First, you have to install your graphic drivers

After install CompizFusion to have somes desktop effects

Then you'll surely to have to configure the decks ( needed to install somes apps ).
All of these must be into Ubuntu wiki

For your videos and music, you have to install the Gstreamer codecs.

To custom you Ubuntu, depending of your version ( KDE or Gnome ) you can go on KDElook or GnomeLook

I'm not a fan of Ubuntu myself; it's ideology of being so obscenely overcomplicated in an effort to make usage and dumbed down as possible makes pretty much any issue you run into impossible to solve short of asking for help.

That being said, their patched fonts are pretty good.

From my point of view, Ubuntu is for newcomers in linux's world as Mandriva for instance

thanks for the replies.
i am new to linux. i just tried it out again after reading that Wine got updated.
i keep on reading about these customizable desktops and what not. it being very customizable. so i decided to install it onto a clean 40GB HDD.

here i am now,
asking you guys for help on what to put .

KDE is harder to customise than Gnome ^^
When I begun with Linux ( Fedora 7 ) I've always use Gnome.

More importantly, make sure your permissions are setup correctly and don't use the root account.

ah k. so i guess there is no need for antivirus unless i get one on another HDD.
well... i am using Ubuntu. and then i have no idea what kind it is... all i know is that it is the one that comes from the ubuntu website x]. i read about Kubuntu... but i liked Ubuntu better. Kubuntu just didn't feel right... i was considering Linux Mint before i installed Ubuntu. i wanted to try Ubuntu then Linux Mint and then if i am not satisfied in the end, imma wipe the whole HDD then put Windows XP and customize it with Visual Styles xD.

so i am sticking with Gnome for now... and umm...
accounts... what's the root account ?
when i first installed Ubuntu, it said put your name, account name, password. then that's it.
am i suppose to make another one?

Root is the control account. It allows you to edit main system files as a SU.

Go into User Accounts and you can make a non-root account.

I use XChat for IRC.

On Ubuntu, to call your SU rights you have to tape : sudo or on others distro su -c ( like in Fedora ).

thanks for the apps. i got most of the ones that seemed necessary for me. now for this firewall/antivirus...? what should i get for that?

as for my user account, it says my account type is custom... i don't even know if there is a SU since there is only my account there.

damn Linux is complicated .__.

By default you have a Administrator account and an user one.
The one you use by logging in is the user account.
You use the administrator when you're using sudo in console mode
