Gaming i can't remember the racing game i played

i had a pc game, it was cars racing game..
all i remember it was kinda dificult to controll (too sensitive steering or something like that)
between 2002 and 2010 I think...
maybe it was in 2004-2006
the special characteristic in this game it had a category of "prototipe" cars... like the next gen F1 cars or something.. they were really nifty, i remember in one of theese cars (not sure if all) had a triangular muffler who would shot flames alternativaly when changing gear...

i remember driving on special circuits... (no illegal racing like the old Need for speed games)
the graphics where pretty and really nice.. (for the age) and i remember running like shit on my pc
maybe it was one of the ford games..

my favorite racing game was need for speed underground 2...
i do enjoy open world stuff

Forza Horizon 3 is awesome, one of my favorite racing games ever.
I hear good things about Redout, Assetto Corsetta and Trackmania. Dirt Rally was fun too. Does Rocket League count? xD

Random things I can throw out that might be it:
Colin Mcrae series? Nascar series? GTR series? Those all were popular racing sim PC games in the early 00s.
