I bet they'll let you choose. Altho if they stretch the top screen, it's gonna look weird when you have a game running where the video from the top screen moves to the bottom screen.

They should let you chose....you know....like lameboy ....
some games look better stretched and some don't.....and honestly its a matter of preference....
like the people who play gba emus fullscreen lol....

This isn't a genuine question, I'm just curious about peoples opinions.
Which of the following do you think will be the one Nintendo goes for when playing original DS games on the 3DS?

Hopefully like the last one but I bet they will keep aspect ratio personally.

Like the GBA, I imagine they'll give you an option for viewing it the correct way, or raping the image to make people feel better that the entire widescreen is being taken up.

Never understood those who distort images to fill up their widescreens, and I never will. It's tasteless.

The question was in regards to playing DS games and not 3DS games

I still think it will be like playing games on the DSiXL

@t377y000

He's referring to old DS games, not the new 3DS games which are designed for the new resolution. DS games will have to deal with the new resolution in one of the three ways Spinal mentioned, either by keeping their original aspect in some kind of letterbox, or employ some sort of stretching...

Perhaps there could be a choice?

Standard resolution/ratio or full screens, something like that.

Yeah there should be choices...

But if there weren't, I think it would be 2 or 3.

Stretched with filter.
Isn't that what Nintendo did with the DS Phat/Lite and GBA games?

Nah, they put a border around the screen.

But the DS's screens are nearly the same as a GBA's, so you can hardly notice it.

If you want my opinion, I think that the only choice Ninty has is the "stretched" option. For instance, making Link roll in the DS Zelda games requires you to move the stylus toward the edge of the screen. This would be annoying with the border, because there's empty space around the screen, so when you drag to the edge of the screen, you might drag out of the screen and into the border and make Link stop running. Frustration...

Also, the DS's native resolution on the 3DS's screen would strain the eyes, honestly.

I always hate stretching; it makes picture looks blurry and soft. I hope Nintendo would go with what they did with GBA games on DS; original resolution with borders.

For those who are saying that it would be the same as running games on the DSiXL, NO IT WONT.
The DSiXL has EXACTLY THE SAME RESOLUTION as the original DS, the 3DS HAS HIGHER RESOLUTION, which means, on a DSiXL, the PIXELS ARE BIGGER and on the 3DS THERE ARE MORE PIXELS.
the picture wil either have to be stretched or have a border, there is no way to play a DS game a 1:1 ratio at full screen.

The top screen being streched would make some games unplayable, anything where you're cotnrolling soemthing which moves between the screens. Imagine what it would look like if you were playing Bust A Move and you're trying to aim a bubble from the bottom screen to the top and bouce it off the side of the top screen, or that game where you draw trampolines to fire Mario up the screen, it would totally screw up your aiming to have one screen stretched.

Hopefully the home button will have some options so you can choose what you want.

I can see the 3D silder being used for stretching Normal DS games.

Since the movies could be either 2D or 3D (not inbetween),
I'd think that the 3D slider could be used for anything,
since it's the game itself that reacts to it by making the image more/less three-dimensional.

NO IT WONT!

The 3DS screen has MORE PIXELS not LARGER PIXELS. 320x240 has more pixels than 256x192. It is NOTHING like playing DS games on a DSiXL NOTHING AT ALL. The DSiXL has the same amount of pixels as all other versions of the DS - 256x192, the 3DS has MORE - 320x240. Which means you either HAVE TO HAVE A BORDER or SOME PIXELS WILL TAKE MORE THAN ONE PIXEL.

To anyone else thinking this -
IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR IT TO BE LIKE PLAYING GAMES ON A DSiXL!

I don't really see any difference from any current games that use both screens in this way, angles are always wrong because Nintendo (and 3rd parties) fail to take into account the gap between the screens, which is equal to about 40 pixels. You can't aim properly anyway.

It's a nice idea, although seeing it so far I think the slider affects the screen itself, and not the game. Of course, I could be completely wrong.
