How to SoftMod a Wii to Play Backup Wii, Gamecube and Wiiware Games

(Disclaimer: Stop in your tracks and visit
https://gbatemp.net/threads/modify-any-wii-4-3-below.171901/
It is a MUCH more updated tutorial for Soft-Modding your Wii. )

(If you new to Softmod a Wii this will give you a 100% safe guide from start-to-finish to play Wii Games, Gamecube Games and Wiiware/Virtual Console games from an USB-drive. Im not kidding. In this guide we only use official files to minimize any risks apart from Step 4 . But I can assure I used this guide to softmod my sister's Wii. She can now play Skyward Sword by USB-drive without problem! :) )

Requirements:
*SD Card (no SDHC)
*SD Card reader
*Wii updated to 4.3 (4.3 is latest version, just update your Wii and you be fine)
*Internet Connected Wii
*USB-hdd to store Wii games and Gamecube games
*To play Gamecube games you need this Wii Console and Gamecube Controller
(No Gamecube Memory Card is required if you use NMM)

A short description what each step does
Step 1 - You install Homebrew Channel to install Apps.
Step 2 - Safety Precaution. Backup Wii System (NAND) to your PC.
Step 3 - Safety Precaution. Install Priiloader to prevent disc updates to damage your Wii.
Step 4 - Patch IOS and Install WADs using Two Easy Apps. Install USB Loader GX to Play Wii Games .
Step 5 - Install a d2x Custom IOS to enable New Wii Games. Install DiosMios to Play Gamecube Games.
(Spoilers Window) Add 'n Play Wii/Gamecube Games + Update USB Loader GX (req for Gamecube games)
Step 6 - emulate Wii System (NAND) on USB-hdd making Add WiiWare/VC Games near impossible to damage your Wii .

1. Install Homebrew Channel

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video :

2. Backup Wii NAND (to restore your Wii if anything goes wrong)

Important! Make sure SD-card has more then 700mb free space
Important! Make sure your Wii has more then 700 blocks open. To Check: Turn on your Wii. Goto Wii Options - Data Management - Save Data - Wii. In 'Blocks Open:' there should stand 700 or higher. Then Return to Wii Menu. Press Back 4 times.
Follow S Winegars instructions in video :
- In BootMii use the Power button to cycle through options in the menu, and Reset to select.

1. When Wii NAND is backed-up using Project Phoenix Medias video guide. Shutdown Wii. Remove SD-card from Wii and put SD-card into Computer.
2. Open SD:\ and check that you have two following files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN'. Copy these two files into a safe location on your Computer. My tips is to save them into a usb-stick or Dropbox if your Computer crash.
3. Once you saved the two files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN' you should remove them from SD-card (NAND.BIN takes 500mb)
4. Done! :)

3. Install Priiloader (regionfree games and stop updates)

1. Plug SD-card into Computer
2. Download Priiloader_v0_7.zip . Unzip and Put it into your SD Card. (SD:\)
3. Download hacks_hash.ini - Scroll down to 'Pre-compiled Hacks download' , right-click, save link as, and save into SD:/apps/Priiloader/ .
4. Remove SD-card from Computer and plug into Wii . Turn on your Wii. Launch Homebrew Channel. Then launch Priiloader.
5. Press A to Install
6. Once Priiloader is installed shut down the Wii (Sometimes you Wii freezes after Priiloader installation. Its totally normal. Just re-start your Wii with reset and after Wi Menu appears shut down the Wii)

(configure Priiloader)
1. Press the "Power" button while holding down the "Reset" button on your Wii until the Priiloader menu is displayed on your screen.
2. In Priiloader select "System Menu Hacks". These are the following 7 hacks I suggest you select: 'Region free EVERYTHING', 'Block Disc Updates', 'Remove NoCopy Save File Protection', 'Block Online Updates', 'Remove Diagnostic Disc Check', 'Move Disc Channel', 'Auto Press 'A' at health screen'. Select Save Settings when Done.
3. To Exit Priiloader select System Menu
4. Done! :)

A video how to configure Priiloader can be found here :

PS: By having Priiloader you prevent disc updates that can damage Homebrew.

4. Install USB Loader and Custom ISO

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video - Zip-file from Youtube video Required :

Important! Skip 10:00 - 13:00 in the video. We will not use Wbfs Manager instead we use WiiBackupManager to add Wii games, explained in Part 5 - spoiler windows - Play Wii/Gamecube games from USB-hdd.

PS: Just so you know - I tried it myself. If you WiiWare wasn't working through emuNAND. Look in USBLoader GX - Settings - Credits, if your using the 'cIOS249-d2x-v10-beta52' it will not work! Go ahead and install IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad using Step 5 in this guide. Then Wiiware works. :)

Fix Blackscreen with VC in emuNAND
Happens when playing USA games with a European Wii. Open selected VC game - 'Settings' - 'Loader Settings'in 'Video Patch 'select Force NTFC. Press Save. Now it should work. :)

Use cheats (Ocarnia) in Wiiware/VC games
Unfortunely I can't get Ocarnia working with Wiiware/VC games in USB Loader GX. So an alternate solution is to use the App '....tbc

The benefit of emuNAND
WAD installation happens on Computer therefore there is NONE TO LESS risk of Brick your Wii. If you wish to play Wiiware/VC games emuNAND is your solution. period.

its okay :)

answer to 1. you can use both. i personally prefer usb loader gx as i can play emunand wiiware from there.
answer to 2. yes its the same from step4, just update it to latest version using spoiler in atep5, how to update usb loader gx.
answer to 3. no, you only install the d2x one time. and change ios one time. thereafter it should be the standard when u open wii mod .

I understand your confusion, and i been hesitate in keeping this guide up on site,
reason the guide is available is, i had lots of trouble finding a comprehensive for
modding and emunand. I also had lots of doubts modding until i used hightechmans videos,
i find him very relaxing and easy to follow and trust. as all is video displayed.

The main issues with this guide is that hightechman use wbfs manager for (usb wii games) and i suggest
another program called wiibackupmanager. the difference is wbfs manager only allows to
add wii games, as it changes your usb (ntfs or fat32) to wbfs format. while wiibackup manager
only puts your wii games to a folder called 'wbfs'. in short, allowing you to put whatever else you want on your USB
like emunand or gamcube games or pictures, videos, ect .

My recommendation is, skip wbfs manager, format your usb to fat32 wii friendly using step5,
play wii/gamecube games from usb drive. and use wiibackup manager.

Thanks for the response, I seem to be stuck on USB Loader now. It worked once or twice but then itt kept getting stuck on the USB initialize screen so I tried to use an updated version (5.1) from googlecodes but still no luck. I have tried not inserting the HDD until asked by the Wii but no joy.

Amy help would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to get this set up for my kid. Thanks

Thanks for the reply.
I didn't use DMLizard and I've been using another app to install Wads no problem. Wii related I'm running virtually every single game I wanted. (Got one issue with Bomberman (J) fonts though)

I didn't do the GC/Wiiware stuff yet because I took 9 hours to follow the tutorial lol so I wanted a break until I had a GC memory card.
I'm getting one very soon so now it's time.

I already did the Wii stuff, got all the games in the HDD, played a lot lately. Should I go on and follow the spoiler window + install DIOSMIOS_v2.10.wad and RVL-BC-v6.wad?
Btw I use my SD for Virtual Console already (before modding the Wii for the Usb Loader functions). I want to keep doing it that way.

Also, I formatted my HDD to Fat32 as suggested back then. But when I ran WBFS manager it asked me to make it WBFS-compatible (?) Does that mean I'll have trouble with the GC games even if I make the folder for them?

Hey guys, i dont know if this forum is active, but i've been using this tutorial and it works well up until step 5. When i follow the YT video, the DMLizard crashes when i input 2 into it resulting into me unabling to download USB Loaders. Out of frustration, i've tried to only unpack the ISO using DMToolbox and inserting it into my Wii by USBi, but inside the homebrew channel, nothing works. All USB loaders are either crashing, freezing or just resetting to the home screen without any icons with music playing indicating I have to restart my Wii. Im using 4.3J, followed all the instructions up to step 4 10:30. Thanks in advance, regards

*sighs*

Format your HDD to Fat32 then use WiiBackupManager, not WBFS Manager.

For GC/Wiiware its kinda simple. For Gamecube you need three things. A d2x-cios-file, diosmios_2.10.wad and rvl-bc-v6.
Make sure you install diosmios into the right ios slot . "After you installed IOS249-d2x goto Main Menu of 'Wii Mod' and select 'Change IOS' and pick 249 . Look in Main Menu right corner it should stand 'Current IOS: 249 . You want to install DIOSMIOS to IOS 249 as you will be playing your gamecube games and wii games from 249."

After you installed d2x, diosmios, and rvl . You can use a usb loader of choice. The positive aspect of USB Loader GX is that.. you can
use diosmios there. Some usb loaders only allows dios mios lite (sd) .

And, for Wiiware stuff, its not related to Gamecube at all. You can use Virtual Console on SDD or USB, depending where you put the
emunand and direct the folders to look into.

Hey guys, just got into the soft mod game and trying to fix a quick problem. I followed the instructions exactly and at the end I am able to boot up my wii games no problem but when I try to boot up my gamecube games it will go to a black screen and stay there until i have to turn off the wii manually.

I have diosmios v2.10, rv.1226, and IOS249 but nothing appears to be working correctly. I have a toshiba 1 TB external harddrive that i have formatted to FAT32 and 32kb but I don't know what else to try and was hoping someone could help me out. I appreciate any kind of advice that someone could offer, thanks in advance.

Just my idea.

Some external harddrives don't work for Wii .
When installin' diosmios , did you install it to ios port: 249 after installing d2x file?
To play gamecube games , your games need to be on usb:/games/ , installed using the method
in spoiler window . And your external harddrives should have only one partition, and be primary.

If your not already, i recommend using USB Loader GX to play your gamecube games.
The recent version of usb loader gx can be downlowded from dmlizard .

Sorry for the confusion. I actually used backup manager. Not WBFS manager. I made confusion with the software's name.

Anyway, the games are now working! So thank you very much for simplifying the explanation to me.

I think. The memory card seem to not be detected at the right slots and I have to switch between slots depending on the games, for some reason.

And I'm not sure if this is the right topic to talk about this but Sonic Gems Collection seems to have issues. When I tried to run Sonic CD it basically shut the wii down. (The light was still on but the TV stopped showing as if the console is running) I read in some 2012 posts that dios mios doesn't work that well with usb loader for some games because they require a real disc... Is that still so?

So I have 30 Mt SD card, but in step 4 when installing the USB loader GX the files are too big to fit on my card. So I looked up in the content of the needed files and in apps folder there is folder named wiiflow. So if i'm correct WiiFlow is another USB loader that isn't used in this tutorial, so is it safe to remove? If it is safe to remove then the files fit to the SD.

Just one more question if I may. With games that have 2 discs, do I just install them with the DM tool as if they're two different games (dm tool -> choose disc 1 -> install -> move to the folder in the HDD -> choose disc 2, repeat?) or is there another process for multi-disc games that I didn't read about yet?

Hey stephaniie, I just bought a wii off ebay that has The Homebrew Channel and Loader GX already installed. What step should I take in order to play back up VC games? Should I start from step 6? "install the emuNAND onto the console? I'm so lost at this. I even googled "what is a loader gx?" lol

but i tried a snes game (chrono trigger) the game seems to load but the screen just goes black and the wii seems to freeze)

Any suggestions?

It could be two reasons.

Your d2x is too 'new' . I noticed i couldn't start Tales of Monkey Island with d2x-v10-beta53 , but I could when I
re-installed IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad ... included in step5 in this tutorial.

You can also try to upgrade your USB Loader GX to lastest version, r1226 .

Hi Andy,
Loader GX is an App to play/backup Wii, Gamecube and VC + wiiWare games .

First step you should take is.. upgrade to latest version of USB Loader GX . Its easy. You replace the files
in sd:/apps/usbloader_gx/ with the ones in ... http://www.filedropper.com/gamecube-files

After you upgraded USB Loader GX ....
To play Virtual Console games. You need an EmuNAND . Its easy too . Just follow the instructions in Step6 .
That should work for you :).

---->

Its a simple concept playin' VC, Wii and Gamecube Games.

As with Windows, you need to update your system too play newer games. The update in Wii is called d2x .
An d2x usually have a longer name . like the ones used in this tutorial in step5 - IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad

IOS249 means you install d2x over the original ios 249 .
[56] means you install it in position 56 .
d2x9b47 means its an d2x version9 beta47.

However, Gamecube games needs one more file in order to work . A DiOSMIOS file.
In step5, We first install an d2x over ios249 then we install diosmios to the same ios number.

DiosMios comes in two versions. Lite and Normal. Lite is used for SD-card and Normal for USB-devices.
Alot of USB Loader (to my knowledge) can't recognize DiosMios and only work with DiosMios Lite. But
USB Loader GX can recognize DiosMios for USB-devices. That's why I push people to use this wonderful
USB Loader.
