How to play VC Wii Games on redNAND

Do this at your own risk, I am not responsible if you brick or something (it's very impossible but who knows...)

Requirements
  • Dimok's redNAND fw.img file *
  • redNAND installed in your SD (Check that it works)
  • Dimok's IOSUhax fw.img file
  • An encrypted (.app, .h3...) VC Wii game
  • An USB
* Note: I use this because I didn't try it with Mocha, if you do it, say me if it works and I will edit the post

0.- If you are noob and you don't have the fw.img files you can compile them from here:

https://github.com/dimok789/iosuhax
To get IOSUhax file do in a command line make cfw if you need redNAND file do make redNAND

1.- Open redNAND by CFW Booter or HaxChi
2.- Go to System Config Tool and install it in the USB (the NAND is the default installation device, remember to change it)
2.1.- Also you can install it with WUP Installer, WUP Installer GX2...
3.- Turn off the Wii U
4.- Extract your SD and connect it to your PC
5.- Change the fw.img and put the IOSUhax one
6.- Connect your SD to the Wii U
7.- Load IOSUhax
8.- Now install it
AGAIN to the USB by your favourite installer
9.-
IMPORTANT STEP: Check that you can launch and play your game in IOSUhax, if you don't do it, it will not launch in redNAND
9.1.- If your game has a different region that console you need to change one of them, if you have region free redNAND it will not launch too, if you have an EUR console and a lot of USA VC Wii games, the best method is change IOSUhax region

10.- After this remove your SD, connect it to the PC put the redNAND fw.img and you will be able to play VC Wii games in redNAND!!

Bye and Happy Hacking!

PD: I will do a video tutorial soon™ :D

This is very cool, and nicely detailed. Does this allow you to be able to use vWii as well or is that still a no go?

No at the moment, for use the cafe2wii we need a full dump of the NAND, vWii mode included and we haven't got a method to do this

Practically you must do the same steps, and it should be the same too.
Replace the redNAND fw.img file with Mocha's redNAND option
And replace the IOSUhax fw.img file with Mocha's IOSUhax option (idk if this exist, if not, use the same IOSUhax file)
I will add an explanation of the process soon, so you can see how this works and this will solve compatibility dudes
Bye!

Can you guys explain to me in very noob terms how to do this. I installed cbhc rednand through Wii.guide. I would like to run Wii vc games but have no idea what these features.img files are or how to get them. I have mocha installed which I thought auto sign patches sysnand but I guess not.

Instead of loading a patched fw.img into memory, Mocha patches an in-memory copy, so when you run Mocha, you don't need fw.img.

Mocha has an option in its menu for turning redNAND on and off. It will sign-patch whichever NAND you boot.

The problem you're trying to solve by doing a double install is that when you run a Wii VC title, it sets some information and tells the WiiU to reboot so it can get into Wii mode to run the actual game. When that special reboot takes place, it never gets to the point of running CBHC/Mocha/redNAND, so you're on your sysNAND. That means the title has to be known to redNAND so you can pick it, and also to sysNAND so it can run.

You'll have to boot and figure out when you need to press B. When you get it right, you'll see the Mocha menu. (It's B for the menu, not B for sysnand.) The logo (picture) might be coming up as the system menu is reloaded, which would be after Mocha's menu would have loaded. Sorry, I can't test it right now.

If you don't get the timing right, you'll just be in redNAND again. No big deal.

I'm very new to all of this as well. Do I have to install something else if I already have mocha CFW? Or can I just turn off redNAND in the mocha menu and then run the vwii game?

When you switch back to sysNAND by turning off redNAND, you install your game there so then it is known to both redNAND and sysNAND. Once you have done that, you'd have your choice of where to launch it from.
If I do the above steps will I have to redownload all of my games to USB in the modified redNAND?
The point of this thread is to help a redNAND user run VC Wii games without giving up on redNAND entirely.

If you want to turn redNAND off permanently because you've learned that it doesn't do much for you, you'd move any games that you have installed on NAND (as opposed to USB) onto your USB drive, then disable redNAND (so you're booted to sysNAND), and finally reinstall (to USB) any games that you installed after you started using redNAND. (You only need to reinstall the games that your sysNAND doesn't already know about. For example, if you decided to try redNAND last week, but you had loaded 10 games last month, you wouldn't have to reinstall those 10 games. You'd only have to reinstall the games you loaded since last week.)

This was possible since beginning since VC Wii games don't boot directly into vWii menu as far as i know. [Yeah, yeah i know it's redNAND and it didn't work before]
But of course, why use redNAND when you have sysNAND?

Sorry again if this is redundant, I'm just trying to verify before I take action. All of my games are installed onto a USB drive. Is it possible to uninstall only the Wii VC games, Switch off redNAND, reinstall the Wii VC games on sysNAND and run them on there? And if that works, I'm still able to switch between red and sysNAND at will using mocha correct? So I only use redNAND to play wii u games and sysNAND to play Wii VC games. I really don't want to abandon redNAND because I'm familiar with it. But, if there's a way to switch between the two when I want to play Wii VC games, I would love to do that.

Only because I'm new to modding and I'm terrified of bricking my Wii U. So, I used Mocha and redNAND because all of the brick safety reassured me that I wouldn't break my system

Yes, you could do that if you want to have to boot to the mocha menu and turn off redNAND each time you want to play a Wii VC game. If you install the Wii VC game while under both sysNAND and redNAND, which is what this thread instructs, you'll be able to 'launch' the game while booted in redNAND.

I saw that you said Mocha doesn't use the fw.img files. What would I have to do to make this work on a mocha cfw?
Edit: Saw the answer in a comment above Thank you for all the help.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway

    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
