USB INSTALLATION ONLY~ Things you will need* A PS3, USB Drive,Imgburn,Rebug Rex cfw (doesn't matter which one as long as its a REX CFW) a petitboot image, Keyboard,Mouse

    1. You will need to be on Rebug Rex Edition to do this so if your not already on Rex then go ahead and do that first.

    2. Once your on REX You need to go over to your computer and you need to download one file just google "petitboot image dbtimage.bin" once thats downloaded put it on to the root of your USB Device.

    3. Plug your USB Drive with the dbtimage.bin file into the right slot on your PS3, Now load up Rebug Toolbox and select this in the order i say ---> Resize Vflash to allow for other os ----> Install Petitboot

    4. Now Petitboot will install

    5. Once thats finished you need to go back over to your Computer and Download Red Ribbon Linux just google it and you should find it over at sourceforge.

    6. Once that's downloaded Burn it to a disc using Imgburn.

    7. Once you have Red Ribbon Linux burned to a CD or DVD go over to your PS3 and in Rebug Toolbox select Boot Other OS and when it asks about LV1 Patches select the one that says Apply Current.

8 Your PS3 should now restart and Petitboot will start up.

Note~ Go Ahead and grab your Keyboard and Mouse you will need it from this point on

    9. Take the Red Ribbon Linux Disc and put it in your PS3 it should show up as a Live option at the top (If it doesn't show up the first time just restart your PS3 and reboot into Otheros).

    10. Now Red Rebbion Linux will start up

    11. Once it starts up go over to the Install Red Ribbon Icon

    12. Select your Country and your language etc etc.

    13. When it gets to the install this is how you should do it select Use Current Partitions ----> Mount Point Specification finished----> Then hit agree or Ok.

    14. Now Red Ribbon will format your USB Drive and will install itself on to it.

    15. This usually take a good 30 mins so sit back relax and grab a cold beer or a lemonade and chill.

    16. Once thats done your all set Enjoy Linux on your PS3.

Just a few notes anytime that you want to boot back into Linux just go into the Rebug Toolbox and select BootOtheros And when it asks what LV1 Patches just hit apply current

Another Note this guide was written with only USB Installation in mind if you were planning on just installing to the HDD there may be other guides on how to do that but from what i gather its more comlex. P.S. This was only Possible due to the hard work of Graf and Glevland and various other devs and lets not forget Sony because if it wasn't for Sony pulling OtherOS i probably never would have written this lovely Tutorial ;)

    Hello!
I would like to thank you, because your guide is the first one that explain step by step how to install linux in the PS3. I spent hours looking for this.
I have a question. My CFW is Rebug Lite (Not REX), but rebug website says that the lite version have OtherOS suport. So, can I assume that your guide will work?

    Thanks again!

No problem man I'm glad my guide helped you out :yay: . Although Rebug Lite has OtherOS Support it will not work with this method. You must be on Rebug 4.46 Rex. I tested it myself on Rebug Lite 4.46 before and all i got was a black screen. But to answer your question it is mandatory that you be on REX CFW for this to work. Also just FYI REX CFW can be installed just like any other CFW you don't have to convert like you have to for DEX.

*If you have any more questions feel free to ask and i'll help you out the best i can*

Hello again, and thanks a lot for your answer!

My CWF is Rebug LITE 4.46. Do you think that I can install the REX 4.46 without problems? I am asking because everything is working great. I can play all my games from a external HDD, I can use my media center, watch my blu-rays and play my emulators. I don´t want to mess everything =)

Now, I am asking myself: Why a person like me, choose the lite version, once REX is the same with more option? Is there a problem with REX that I don´t know?

To answer your question installing REX will not mess anything up at all, Everything will work just like it works on Rebug Lite. However the only difference between 4.46 REX and the CFW you're on right now is REX gives you more options in the Rebug Toolbox. I.e. Installing "Linux" Via the Rebug Toolbox. REX also gives you the option to convert to DEX.

    Hello wiired!

Yesterday I changed my CFW to REX.
As you promise, your guide works! I could boot the Red Ribbon LIVE CD and even browser in the internet. Thank you again!

The only problem that I found was the installation itself. Tried with 2 USB flash drives (8gb Sandisk and 4gb Kingston)... I don´t know why, but I can format them, create all partition and copy all files. After that (100% copied) the system just says that cant continue the setup and abort the installation.

I put these flash drivers in my computer, and I can see all files and partitions created.

Maybe, its need a real USB HDD. Or maybe I need to use the left USB port (only tested the right one). I will do more tests today. But I am very happy just to run the Live version without mess the GameOS.

    Finally! I found the problem!

The problem was in the country selection. I was selecting Brazil, and I don´t know why, the installation only worked selecting USA.

So, if you have problem in the middle, try to select another country (USA for example). =)

My apologies for not responding to your problem immediatlety I've been really busy as of late. I'm glad that everything works for you :P

Here is a link to The official Website for Red Ribbon GNU/Linux http://redribbon.t15.org/

Btw one thing i will mention DVD's do not play very well on Red Ribbon Linux (Most likely due to no Drivers for PS3 yet) However Video Files i.e. MP4 and AVI play just fine

P.S. Here is the command to install the software center so you can get more applications on your PS3 sudo apt-get install software-center

    Hi wiired24,

Thanks for the tute, it was for me the final piece in the puzzle for my Rebug.4.46.1.OtherOS++ Upgrade.

    My questions are:

    • What's the difference between 'LV1 patches: Apply All' & 'LV1 patches: Use current'?
    • Why do you recommend 'LV1patches: Use current' in your note above?

    Thanks in advance,

    Kal

Thank you for the question, The reason that i recommend u select "Use Current LV1 Patches" rather than "Apply all" is because i tried both and it seems that "Apply all" did not work as it should have however, When i selected "Use current LV1 Patches" Everything worked just fine. As far as what the difference is all i can say is that at least from my experince one works and the other doesn't. I would still recommend u going with "Use Current" however if u want to give "Apply All LV1 Patches" a shot then go right ahead xD. And Don't mention it man i Like helping people out. Happy Hacking:yayps3:

I have a question since I haven't been keeping up on Linux on the PS3... lol

Does this give access to the GPU acceleration?

I remember the old firmwares and at one point there was a hack that allowed full GPU acceleration then Sony updated the firmware blocking that.

(I am on Rebug 4.46 Rex for now so far I like it a lot.)

Well its a good news bad news thing the good news is that with OthersOs++ We have full access to the hardware, however nobody has built a working driver for the RSX GPU(For Linux). Until somebody releases a driver for it then were pretty much in the same boat it would be like having a badass car but no keys to drive it. Also as a side note Gitbrew did release a working GPU driver for FreeBSD on the PS3 about a couple years ago i think the wiki is still around.

    Thank you!!!

So it probably has some basic acceleration right now, or at least access to the RAM? With it possibly getting better in the future. (I don't hold my breath though as I tend to use ATI graphics cards and Linux support has always been hit and miss on those.)

Yeah it has access to the Ram but as for acceleration unfortunately no:unsure:
Here is a Link to the FreeBSD PS3 Guide, I Highly recommend trying to install FreeBSD if you are wanting GPU acceleration. http://wiki.gitbrew.org/wikibrew/PS3:FreeBSD

I also made a tutorial some time ago, for how to get FreeBSD up and running on your PS3 http://gbatemp.net/threads/how-to-get-freebsd-running-on-your-ps3.354429/

Also some side notes installing FreeBSD is not easy it in fact is quite a pain in the ass most things have to be set up manually there is no Nice GUI Wizard or anything like that for installation, However if u can manage to get it installed and get a GUI up and running you will have a PS3 with GPU acceleration :)

Also as far as the future goes for an RSX Driver for Linux i wouldn't hold my breath on it honestly as far as I know Git was suppoused to be working on a Driver for Linux but it never really came to fruitioun instead they made one for FreeBSD and this was like 2 years ago i believe

I just followed the entire guide from top to bottom on rebug 4.46 rex edition, installing petitboot through rebug toolbox and it won't even boot into petitboot, all I get is black screen, dead usb ports and a dead ps3. This guide is bogus, trash and rubbish, it doesn't do what it says on the tin. Now I will have to take my ps3 60gb to a repair shop. Honestly I don't know why I bothered in installing other os. My PS3 was working perfectly before this guide.

I am sorry to hear that however it is your choice What you choose to do with your PS3 System and this guide has worked for everybody else on the forum "But You" and with that being the case it tells me you did NOT follow the instructions properly...

Hi wiired24! First of all, thanks a lot for your great thread!!

I have an issue. I followed all of your steps but I can't create a partition for red ribbon on my HDD... The partition was created on my USB key and erase everything inside my USB key (petitboot was inside my USB)
