How to get java on Ubuntu?

I've looked up how to use .jar files and get a java plugin for firefox or use wine but theyre all confusing

can someone find a guide for "noobs" please? Its really confusing...:/

You should have Java in Ubuntu as standard. If not it'll be in the restricted extras pack (search for it in the Software Manager)

To run .jar files you have to mess a bit since Ubuntu will just open them like an archive by default. Get the jar file, right click and go into permissions (I think) and you need to the check the run as executable button. THis has to be done for each jar file you want to. You'll also need to reset the default program for opening .jar files to OpenJDK. Ubuntu can be a bit paranoid over security.
