How real is the possibility of a softmod exploit?

I don't remember seeing that reported anywhere. Do you have any sources?
On second thought, I believe it was actually the iPatched units that had USB disabled. Then later with Mariko the exploit was patched properly.

It's information I gained from browsing this forum over the years, I wouldn't know where to begin to look to find the exact threads it was mentioned in.

Just switched methods, not disabled:

If you're not putting any time limit on it, then wait for quantum computing and crack the encryption. Otherwise, outlook not so good.

Well, Nintendo is two steps ahead of everyone else again 🤭

They apparently now consider quantum computers a potential threat, so I hope you'll love to hear about the fact, that the boot process uses quantum-safe XMSS signatures instead of usual and publicly documented by NVIDIA - (potentially possible to attack with quantum computers) ECDSA or RSA.

(I would link directly to the sources but the antispam filters don't let me, it's on switchbrew wiki)

Lol, of fucking course it's future-proof. At this point I think that a softmod exploit will be a miracle.

Exploits come from finding bugs in the code not bruteforcing encryption but a software exploit is years away if we ever get one. If I remember correctly, only the 3DS could be hacked by bruteforcing encryption and only because a glitch was found which meant it only needed to be partially bruteforced. The PS3 private keys were calculated using a glitch and not bruteforced.
