Well there are many machines I use on a daily basis, but the file server is generally the one which stays on 24/7 (low-power Atom box with some TB hdds). Any services for which I want sustained execution I just throw onto that box.

No reason to be stupid and waste electricity.

I leave it on cause i am downloading like 5 torrents at the same time but when i wake up its turned of so i guess mines not on are alot

I think in 2 years my computer has been shut down for a total of a week, and that was because I went on vacation.
I never turn it off. The closest it gets to shutting down is when I let it rest for a minute because it's been on for a while and is being slow.

It runs whenever the power isn't out or I'm not doing maintenance inside it. So basically it runs for months with few-hours-long breaks.

I usually leave it on all day but turn it off at night.

Unfortunately our internet sucks to download stuff on, or I'd leave it on all the time.

Thankfully the university has excellent internet around campus that doesn't monitor torrents.

I'm downloading too much shit to turn it off. Usually I just lock my laptop and go to sleep. Last thing I need is my parents seeing my wallpaper.

I always turn it off when I will not use it for over 30 mins, unless I'm downloading something.
I guess it's an old habit from back when I had a laptop.

I turn it off when not using it, anything else is just a waste of energy. I don't download anything anymore, but even if I did I spend enough time on the PC that they could complete in the background instead of leaving it overnight.

People who rave on about their number of days of "uptime" need a kick in the head.

There are legitimate reasons for leaving one on while out, but who needs to access their remote desktop while asleep?!

Wow.. What kind of computer is it? Mine is an old Dell PowerEdge 400SC. The motherboard only supports agp graphix cards, so I can't use the pci ones in stores, tho i found a nice graphix card for 50 bucks, nvidia pny gefore 6200. Shader 3.0 support and direct 9. Good enough

Well, I just close the light of my computer and leave it running, because sometimes I'm busy, but I always open my computer everyday, so I always turn off my computer every night before I sleep.

Lol i only turn mine off when i'm going to be away from it for longer than 24 hours. My PC Can't hibernate cuz of some hardware issue, otherwise i'd do that quiet often.

Q: Eight myths about energy efficient office equipment

Myth 1: When equipment is turned 'on' there is a power surge so large that leaving your equipment 'on' consumes less energy.
Reality 1: If present (which is not always the case) then the duration of this power surge is so small (seconds) that it is comparable to a few seconds in "on' mode. Whenever your equipment is not used for a few minutes, it makes sense to turn it off or (let it) switch to a low power mode.

Myth 3: Frequent turning off computers crashes the harddrive
Reality 3: Switching off computers will have no significant effect on the useful life of a harddisk. Today manufacturers specify some 40,000 power cycles for a harddrive, equivalent to 30 start/stop cycles for each working day over five years.

twice a month is my maximum (aka only when I clean).

I'm always seeding my torrents, when it's not in use I only turn off the monitor.
