I only turn it off really when I need to restart it or I'm taking it with me. For my desktop it's almost never on unless I'm doing video capturing because my capture card is in the desktop. I only leave my desktop on if I'm rendering a video as video rendering in Sony Vegas takes forever and a half to render. My laptop stays in hibernate mode when not in use usually.

It stays on for most of the day until I go to bed, when I turn it off.

It then automatically turns on again at 15:12 1 minute before I get home every day so it is ready for me to use! (Every weekday, not weekends, at weekends it is on nearly the entire day)

Q: Eight myths about energy efficient office equipment

Myth 1: When equipment is turned 'on' there is a power surge so large that leaving your equipment 'on' consumes less energy.
Reality 1: If present (which is not always the case) then the duration of this power surge is so small (seconds) that it is comparable to a few seconds in "on' mode. Whenever your equipment is not used for a few minutes, it makes sense to turn it off or (let it) switch to a low power mode.

Myth 3: Frequent turning off computers crashes the harddrive
Reality 3: Switching off computers will have no significant effect on the useful life of a harddisk. Today manufacturers specify some 40,000 power cycles for a harddrive, equivalent to 30 start/stop cycles for each working day over five years.
Lol save energy guyz

When I go out for a long time/when I go to sleep.

That if I'm not downloading anything.

I turn off my computer only when I go to bed. So I chose always. It's running when not in use and when in use... Except bed time, as said.
That's...closer to never than always.

I found hibernating more efficient than shutting it down. Plus, I HAVE to hibernate or else I'll always suffer from slow start-up. My laptop is 4 years old, with decent specs, but I've tried XP, Vista, 7 and even Ubuntu and it always suffers from laggy start-up.

My computer takes like fifteen minutes to boot up, so I almost never shut it down.

lol sometimes that happens to my computer, so Now I put big files on my computer in the shared folder so it doesn't get copied to the server, because that wastes lots of time, especially because I have like 10=30 gbs worth of stuff that are in shared.
