I would hold out another week for the RX480, rumored to be as powerful as the GTX980 at $200
    also depends on the resolution

    Just the usual 1080p resolution.

I kinda want to stay below $1500 if I can I think the RX 480 will be too much.

Yeah but it's AMD and I had bad luck with AMD GPUs in the past. Might save up for a gtx 1070 for black friday if the gtx 970 is that bad.

The next line of graphics cards will beat 9XX line easily (or so they say). Unless the 970 is at a reduced price, just wait.

I noticed you only have an SSD in your build. Will you need an HDD for extra storage? 500GB disappeared quick for me so having an extra TB or more helps a lot.

gtx 970 is not bad. 16 gb ram is overkill right now, except if your rendering video an the likes, but if its cheap keep it.
    build looks solid :)
and btw that build wont get you everything on ultra for witcher 3, but good enough so you dont notice the difference! unless you like 30fps, for that its solid!

The ram is fine in both costs and future proofing. There is absolutely no reason to use 4GB sticks.

thats why i said if its cheap, keep it. if hes getting like 80$ designer bs toss it.
and dont get windows 7, go for 10 or youll have to migrate later. lots of pc games will be windows 10 exclusive and the performance is better, especially on ssd.

That's a very good upper-mid range build! If I were you, though, I'd swap out the 970 for a 1070, just for future-proofing sake

Unless you plan to get the 970 cheap off of eBay or something, that is

The RX480 has a lot of promise, wait a week and you'll know.
Apart from that, the build seems pretty sound.

RX480 can get 75+ fps on DOOM Nightmare quality and 60 fps average on witcher 3 highest setting. Without optimised drivers.

If it fits the bill for the price then buy it.

Frankly there's next to no advantage to picking the 970 over the RX 480, judging by what's been shown so far. Maybe better performance for Nvidia-optimized stuff (Fallout 4, Witcher 3's hairworks, etc.) and perhaps marginally less power consumption. I'm not seeing the GTX 970 or the comparable (and IMO, superior) R9 390 for anything under $250; I can't imagine the 480 jumping up past $225 at a launch premium. Unless those 970s start falling off a cliff pricewise I really would recommend waiting a couple weeks.

while i agree with you we havent seen the 480 yet and nvidia driver stability has been better overall. i would wait for the 480 and if its stands to be stable and has good aftermarket versions id get one. otherwise 970 is the safest bet in my opinion.
