Gaming How do I know if my port is open?

I wanted to setup netplay on a emulator. The instructions I was given was to "Setup port forwarding of UDP 5394 on your router to the pc's IP address"

Of course I followed the directions (I think) and created a static ip on my pc then went to the router config, under advance clicked gaming and it asked for two sets of numbers from 0 to 65535. I just wanted to open on port. I assume I did it right as instructed by many sources, but how do I know it's done right before I try with someone else?

I don't recommend simply opening all the ports the way you did. Even if you did want to open all ports, you should do via DMZ.

Just open up port 5394.

Where did i say I opened up "All the ports" I said I wanted to open up a port on 5394, and I asked "How do I check if it is open?"

The two numbers could have been TCP and UDP requests, or they could have been a range (the start and end thereof).

5394 is between the numbers mentioned so if it is start and end then put it in twice, if it is TCP and UDP options then do just UDP.

Test wise there are internet sites that can do it if you don't have an external connection (don't do it internally as some routers will detect it and redirect internal requests). External connections could mean a phone on 3g these days, if you have a VPN from your PC (as opposed to router level) it should do it or if you have to set up your mate's connection then if you are doing that over teamviewer or something then that works too,

Most likely thought you set the port range from 0 to 65535.
There are a few sites you can use to test your ports.

Why would you blur your internal IP address?

Also that is a lot of TCP ports, including some pretty juicy ones.

You probably shouldn't forward port 80-3480.
Anyway, assuming the IP address is correct that should work.
Normally you would use an online tool to check if the port is open, which has to be ran while the server is running and listening for connections.
