My friend bought a 3DS the first gen I think. He tried to mod it. And he messed it up. When I hit the power button the blue light comes on and fades out. I have never mounted a 3DS and I don't know how to unbrick it. So I bought it from him just to try. Hasn't went well so far. He erased all the files off the SD card so I don't know what to do any help would be appreciated thank you

Not again… not another one of these. "Something does not work… I'll better delete everything!"

Depending on when your friend did the modification you will need a different file to try. Start with the newest Luma3DS. Put the file on an empty, FAT32 formatted SD.
To rule out any issue with the SD itself → quad reformat

Even if your SD passes hardware check with h2testw, F3 or F3X try another SD as well if it does not work.

Note that the symptoms can be caused by hardware damage as well. In case of hardware damage you might hear a popping sound and the blue LED most likely shuts of immediately instead of fading. Still hard to tell the difference.

Good luck!
