I am new to all of this and I recently homebrewed my Nintendo 3ds 11.6. I am trying to get retroarch to run and for every core I load...I get a garbled top screen and a red bottom screen. Can you please help?

The payloads for 11.6 are buggy and have been for the last year or so. I'm not sure what guide you followed but it was outdated. There are several methods to install a full cfw (Custom FirmWare) on your 3ds, though none of them are completely free. Try going onto 3ds.guide and seeing which method works best for you.
