Hardware help connecting switch to vga monitor with adapter

That adapter isn't a passive adapter. It's a hybrid. It uses the charge from HDMI to power it to convert it to VGA. It's impossible to go HDMI to VGA without some sort of converter.
These often suck, or die quite fast.

That looks like it might be an active adapter? I'm not certain. Can you provide a link to where you bought it, or what brand/model it is?

It might be power? If it is an active adapter, it's likely it can't pull enough power without an external supply.

Looks like an older 4:3 monitor so i'm guessing 1280x1024 resolution?

You could try setting the switch to 720p, but even if it worked the picture would be horribly squashed as the Switch only supports 16:9 widescreen.

That converts VGA to HDMI, not HDMI to VGA. It seems you bought the wrong type of adapter.

Worked quite well with a 1280x720 VGA projector.

Note that you might need to set the Switch to Full Range RGB when using one of these adapters; otherwise, the image might be washed out.
