Hardware HDD not working on Wii U

I have a 300GB Verbatim HDD, USB 2.0 and formated in NTFS, I plugged in the back of the Wii U and when I turn it on it doesn't recognize it, also when I go to setting it just stays there "wating for device" or something like that...any ideas what to do?
Ps: I tried with a 8GB SanDisk USB and it works just fine...

is the HDD POWERED, by AC or a y-cable(using 2 USB ports)

just a normal USB cord in ONE USB port will NOT work

thanks, that makes me feel better , i have a few y cables and i know what they are for, its just been so long that i forgot they existed
