I actually have my dd-wrt router set up with its own IP and everything. The question is, is this everything you did? Did you change the operating mode in the Advanced Routing tab? Did you turn off the dd-wrt router's DHCP? I presume the two routers are connected by a cable and not using a wireless repeater mode?

The setups I tried were the wireless repeater mode and a wired mode. The wired mode I might have given up on too quickly. Just trying to figure out if there might be any other settings that are different. I followed the guides on the dd-wrt wiki and ended up doing all sorts of things like disabling NAT and tons of other crap.

Edit: also, what firmware do you have on your dd-wrt? Model? :3 Sorry about all the questions. I don't understand routing terribly well, to be honest.

Apart from the wifi network, I also disabled "Use DNSMasq for DHCP Use DNSMasq for DNS" but I really don't think it is necessary.

I use it wired, and the wire goes to the switch port, not the WAN port. The wan is disabled and dhcp server I leaved turned on.

Do you know if your router is Broadcom or Atheros chip? If it is atheros, it is harder to create a wireless repeater, some options wil lnot be visible. If your router is atheros, try using Gargoyle firmware, my favourite.

The router im using for this is one wrt54g v8 with
DD-WRT v24-sp1 (07/28/08) micro

Fell free for any question, we are here to help :)

Boom, set up my CentOS box with hostapd, ssid attwifi, and tagged someone, a "Hajime" from "Linux."

Who apparently doesn't play Mii Plaza. BOOOOOOOOO.

Is there a list of MACs we're cycling through? I'm currently using 40:53:50:4F:4F:46 and I'd love to tag more people.

Huh. Alright, I'll give that a try then. My router has a Broadcom chip. The wireless repeater bridge works okay I guess, but the problem is that any time I make a change to the configuration on the dd-wrt router, the wireless network in my house hiccups on everyone, so I'm going to try just setting mine up the way you did. Having a relay station isn't important enough to make the Internet unusable for half an hour three times a day. :P Plus with wireless repeater bridge mode I supposedly can't run the virtual WLAN with different security settings than the primary router's, which is another needless pain in the ass.

Thanks for the help! Much appreciated. I'll give this a shot once everybody in the house is in bed so I don't keep messing everything up. :P

I also whitelisted my 3ds MAC address so anything that is not my 3ds cannot connect to my nintendo hotspot, as it has no security to imitate the original ones... it is good to avoid neighbours hunting for a open wifi to connect :)

I'm gonna update my Reddit post to tell people to use attwifi.
I bet it's gonna take some time until everybody uses attwifi, heh. Cycling through the "older" MACs from the sheet with _The Cloud for the last time now I think, in ~8 hours I'll try it with attwifi. I guess I'll see how many (if any) do the same by then.

OK YES!!!! We can definitely now say with certainty that SSID matters. Here's what happened with my test:

3DS#1(Jimbo) seeded the MAC I used using SSID _The Cloud
Now I connected to MAC with SSID attwifi using my 3DS#2(BOSS)...... No response

So now either 1 of 2 things potentially have happened. Either I made a mistake, or the MAC is seeded on _The Cloud with Jimbo and seeded on attwifi with BOSS

3DS#3 connects to MAC with _The Cloud. Jimbo comes through.
3DS#4 connects to MAC with attwifi. BOSS comes through.

So here's what we now know. You can still only use a MAC once every 8 hours regardless of SSID. Connected to MAC with 3DS#1 using SSID attwifi and got no response. But we now know that the MACs can be simultaneously seeded with Mii's from different SSIDs and the SSID you use will be the one you pull.

So now we need to decide on what SSID to use. I stand behind attwifi 100% and here's why. I don't like _The Cloud because the _ can't be used on Android devices so it cuts out a segment of users. I also despise the SSID Bestbuy. Yes it works but it requires the added step of adding it as one of the 3 wireless connections. This is has many drawbacks. For one it takes up a connection, that's annoying. 2 and my biggest complaint, You have to power cycle your 3DS between each MAC change. Simply disabling the 3DS wireless, changing the MAC, and the turning the 3DS wireless back on never worked for me. I'd love for some to say it wasn't that way for them though then I'd know it's my equipment. Plus, this creates one more setting people have to mess it. People are having a hard enough time getting it to work, this would be just another potential failure point for them and we need to make this as easy and as least complicated as possible.

Great news knowing this! Yesterday evening, I fixed my issues with my script (turned out that my routing spontaneously stopped working after a random package updated itself, found a different set of iptables calls on the web, and everything worked again) and did a similar test - got "Tane" on my first 3DS from _The Cloud, and less than two minutes later, "Magnum" from attwifi. By the way, my Android smartphone does let me use underscores - maybe it's a question of the version, the ROM, the root or whatever. Anyway, I am switching to attwifi as well, as I remember reading that some other systems don't allow spaces... so we better keep it to regular letters. Even though getting to a Nintendo Zone using the client on attwifi sends a European 3DS to a "coming soon"-type page... so much for standards and systems not following them.

I'll change my script to use attwifi by default (but maybe we'll habe to come up with a better solution later). Tweaked many other things, script should be more stable now, and possibly more reliable as well (i.e. if somebody had problems, they might be gone now). Added all MAC addresses from the Google spreadsheet, changed default entry to the first entry in the list. Factored the script a little bit better, the call to the DHCP/hostap servers can now be switched out more easily, which should help people who are using a modded router. I'll replace the original version of the script in a few minutes.

I couldn't imagine someone who haven't opened that app when they finished the setup.

There, spent the last several hours writing a Linux script to streamline some of this stuff. I doubt anyone's interested, but if you have a Linux box with an Ethernet interface and a WiFi interface, I've attached my scripts and instructions using hostapd.

Can anyone confirm this working with Wifi Tether 3.3 beta2 for Android? If it definitely works I'm gonna root my phone for this

on 4.3 stock using 3.4 experimental I have not managed to do it (gnex maguro), 3.3 did not work at all, no way to even start the AP.
On 3.4 experimental it starts the AP if I tick the "send netd max client cmd" but in that case the phone has no internet access.
If I do not tick it, the log file says it has started the AP but even though I have internet access it is not broadcasting the ssid so the 3ds cannot see where to connect (even if I just manually set up the attwifi connection it cannot connect).

Something odd.. I've 'streetpassed' plenty of people today, but now after switching to any mac address with attwifi, I can't connect from the Nintendo Viewer app, and it goes from internet to streetpass in the top-left corner on the home menu..
