When I turn my 3ds on, the screen is black. When I go into recovery mode, it loads up but gets an error when updating. Any idea whats up?

I've tried that too. with a game in, without a game in, with an sd card in, without an sd card in. :/ no luck

Fortunately for you, no, it isn't a hardbrick.
Unfortunately for you, it seems like a softbrick, and the unic way to escape is updating to 10.5.
How did it happen?

it wont even let me update to 10.5 but this happened when i was trying to unlink nands by using an app my friend gave me called "TinyFormat." After I used it the screen went black and stayed that way.

While formatting what nand were you in? If you have menuhax try holding L on startup

Format the SD card again (in FAT32) with SDFormatter , put it back in the console and start it... just try.
alright. i'll try that.

EDIT: Nope. that didnt work either :/

i was told to use systemNand. and i never had menu hax. ironhax/browserhax.

You were supposed to format in emunand. That's what I did
Most people format sysNAND, since they'll be using emuNAND for everything it doesn't make sense to format emuNAND.

Do you have tubehax DNS installed?

Not really, i've formated my sysnand for unlinking, it works fine.

OP: You had the DNS that blocks nintendo updates right? You're kinda screw'd, guess you need a hardmod :P

Hardmod isn't needed, if you change ssid in your router settings, when enter in recovery mode it will ask to configure a connection, and there you can remove tubehax dns.

Nice, i didn't know that, thanks for the info! Though if he wants to downgrade from 10.5 he would still need the hardmod :p (or restore an old backup)
