Well, I think I'm screwed if anything happens. Here's my little story:
Well, exact two months ago I did a downgrade from 10.3 to 9.2. It was successfully (yay) and I backed up my sysnand. 1 week ago my hard drive died. And my last backup is exactly 1 day before I did a downgrade (plz, kill me for this). Yeah, today a sata to usb adapter arrived. And well, chdsk says the drive is dead :(. I've installed arm9loaderhax a few weeks ago and I only found a backup of a sysnand with arm9loaderhax in it on my usb stick.

But maybe I'm not screwed! I did use a clean 16gb micro sd card for installing arm9loaderhax!! And, profit, there's a NAND. bin on it! I don't know if it's 9.2 or 2.1 but it's sysnand! What should I do? I think injecting the nand into emunand is the best idea (with backing up my 10.6 of course), right? Or do you guys think this nand is 9.2 from restoring via decrypt9?
I'll test it tomorrow, thanks for your help!
Peace out and

P.S: never buy seagate, I cannot trust this company anymore because no hard drive died for me until last week! I bought a western digital a few hours ago , waiting for Amazon...

Edit 1: I just saw that this thread title is shit!sorry for that :'(

So the problem is that you lost your sysnand backup? What's preventing you from simply backing up your sysnand again?

Or is the problem that your sysnand got clobbered and you couldn't find a sysnand backup to restore it with?

Seagate is really crap!

9 out of 10 Seagate 24/7 HDD's died in about 2 years

Toshiba and WD still running fine

And forget it to try to read the S.M.A.R.T values of a Seagate Disk, you have to convert them, that's just pain in the ass

The problem is he does not have a clean sysnand backup. The only one he has now is with the modified firms for a9lh. So now if he ever wanted to get rid of a9lh it would not be possible.

I am going to assume you made your emunand before you installed a9lh. If so downgrade your emunand to 9.2 and back it up. Now you will have a semi-clean 9.2 nand backup that you could flash to sysnand if you wanted to remove a9lh.

I am in the same situation you are. I deleted my old 9.2 backups but my emunand is region changed so I can not use it the restore my sysnand.

then you came to unburden or to ask a question?

To ask a question...

Exactly! I'll report you as soon a I flashed the mysterious nand.bin from my second sd into emunand. Hopefully it is the right one. If not I have to downgrade my emunand...

Huh, lol really? Well, I read out all S.M.A.R.T values with Linux mint installed on my usb 3.0 stick and they looked normal (only 1 value was "moderate"), but if I have to convert them, plz tell me how to do this. Oh, and if I try to copy dates from the hard drive to another place it tells me "input-output error" , this means the drive has a big damage!

I also found a nand.bin on the sd card I used to install a9lh(I used a different card just in case). Hopefully it is the NAND backup I used to restore back to 9.2 from 2.1 and not the one to downgrade to 2.1. Although I could install the 2.1 and then update through system settings but that would be very risky on a N3DS and I don't have a hardmod..... So.... Yeah, not doing that anytime soon.

What's the problem? I don't see any reason to remove a9lh. If you desperately want to do it then use cakes fw and disable firm protection. Go to system setting and update -> a9lh removed.(latest fw 10.6 can be downgraded now too)
Or you use sysupdater with 9.2 fw files and cakes fw, should work too.

Edit: Sry. Don't make the shit above it will brick.
Don't update 2.1. You'll brick for sure on N3DS

check this: http://sgros.blogspot.co.at/2013/01/seagate-disk-smart-values.html

and this: http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/Seagate_SER_RRER_HEC.html

if you want to copy data from the disk I'd suggest to make an image of the bad disk using systemrescuecd which you can get from here: https://www.system-rescue-cd.org/SystemRescueCd_Homepage

burn it or install it on USB with: http://www.linuxliveusb.com/download

boot the systemrescuecd

check the connected drives

identify you bad disk and a good disk for backup
mount the good disk, don't mount the bad disk

start the backup with:

dd_rescue /dev/sdx /mountpoint/of/good/disk/backup.dd

--> /dev/sdx is the bad drive

wait

maybe there'll be some errors during copy but ignore that in the first place, when your backup is finished you can mount the backup using loop device and/or you can try to repair the filesystem of the backup

don't attempt any repair on the bad disk, it can only go worse.

  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
