Like most people I got the dreaded black screen and sometimes a brief green screen momentarily. Never an error message, however. Here's what worked and didn't work:
Works (after installing IOS56-64-v5146.wad):
* burning to disc after removing update partition
* running from Gecko 1.92 (however I think this was due to modchip)
* Configurable USB Loader release 41 by choosing IOS223 mload (didn't need error 2 fix)
Doesn't work (for me):
* USBLoader GX r717 (tried 249, 222, 223 just get a black screen and even deleted the .cfg files)
* Neogamma R6 from DVD and from USB
I'm not sure if it is the way I installed Hermes 222 and 223. I believe I used the standard practice to install 222 with default then 223 as 37 merge 36. I thought it was weird that Configurable worked with 223 but USB Loader GX didn't.

I gave up! I have not enough knowledge for this kind of stuff. Maybe other PAL users had good luck but I didn't. Luckily after a lot of fidling and trying Wii Sports Resort works again, but I'm left with a bunch of Hermes cIOSes that don't do SHIT! It would be great if some person could tell me why this doesn't work for me (PAL Wii 4.0 wiikey, latest usbloader gx) but for now it's alas... and waiting while staring at the wall.
Okay, so here are six IOS's (only ones prior to 36) that have an available update on my Wii:
IOS12 v6 -> v12
IOS13 v10 -> v16
IOS17 v512 -> v518
IOS21 v514 -> v525
IOS33 v1040 -> v2834
IOS34 v1039 -> v3091
And, my IOS36 version is v1042 and could be updated to v3094.
Does anyone know if any of these need Trucha installed other than IOS36?
Does anyone know if any of these not being updated might be causing Guitar Hero 5 not to load?

Okay, I finally got this crap working! So, here is my tutorial:
Install Hermes as Page 7 will tell you all about.
So, if it still doesn't work, use the DOP-IOS program. Select each of your IOS's that do not say stub and update them if needed except for IOS 36. Skip the hash thing, it's just the trucha patch. Go smoke some hash instead, you'll need it to get this crap working. Skip over any of the stub ones, really important. Okay, so you've got them all updated and you kept skipping that hash check... eventually you're done. Then, run the Trucha Bug Restorer, select IOS 249 to install with. Then have it do your IOS 36 and have it get the latest version. Go smoke some more hash. Now, go get the latest USB Loader - 717. Not the version on your HDD. I was using 714 after doing the above and it didn't work. See what saying you have the latest version does, eh? So select Hermes 223, Block IOS Reload and Fix 002 On, launch, and OMG it launches. Nifty.
Hope this saved some of you from staying up to 5am.

Burnt with ImgBurn on 2.4 speed using Ritek DVD-R
Disk boots from Disk Channel, performs the on-disk update
Works perfectly - No issues with any other Homebrew or other games loading, including Wii-Sports Resort
I tried burning with a BrickBlocked ISO this morning and just got a black screen, so leave the update on the disk and this should work
Sorry, but I don't know if the same would apply to a softmod

Guess I gotta be super specific here.
The setup I mentioned works to play physical backups in the actual disc slot of a softmodded Wii. No USB loader involved whatsoever.
So just to clear this up, none of these options work for a basic soft modded wii correct? Only on USB loaders?

I have Cioscorp installed and this is the first game that did not play via my disc channel, i done all your steps above and i can get it to run fine now, BUT is there anyway to get this to run via disc channel, i have the game region changed to PAL for my Wii and it shows in the disc channel but get a black screen when loaded, any ideas?

TBH mate the best thing to do is have a quick look at the song line up and see if there of your personal preference, as with regards to the hassle to get it to work, it took me less that 5 minutes following the steps to get this game to boot, actually really easy if im honest, just would like away of getting it to boot via Cioscorp....
