If you guys want a real laugh and don't want to read all of this then just read the first paragraph, the third paragraph and the 4th one. But please read all of it if you can.

Well, before I give you the humiliating story of this test I have to tell you who don't know a catch up. This is NOT new news, this is about a 3 year old thing (4 on new years) Well, the goverment decided to do a test on if students will improve their grade scores if the goverment gave then laptops to work with. Theis laptops are to be used in school and to be taken home to help children's responobility on things. Theis laptops are wired HOT. They have a GPS (or something like that) device that can tell the police exactly were it is when it's tured on. (I nifty little trick in case it's stolen) It also has a program that alows the teachers to see what exactly are you looking at on your screens when they want to but you have to be connected to the CPS wireless/wired internet to do it.

They are given to only a few schools in Illioise and a few states around it. And in those states only a few schools are given the laptops. I am in one of them, Chicago Illioise to be exact. They were given to me when I was in 6th (I'm in 8th) and we were the first generation to be given these. Which sucks for the new 6th and 7th graders that get an even MORE moetered laptop than we first gens got. Of corse they get an even better desin, better case, better programs and in a few years (maybe the next 6th graders next year) they will probaly get Vista. I saw a sneek peek at the new cases that the next 6th graders are gonna get and they are SWEET!! You know those covers that they keep their pizza's in deliverys, they are kinda like them but way better. They get these soft little straps to carry their hevey laptops around in their case when we first geners are stick strapless and have to carry our laptops on our hands through out the ENTIRE DAY on top of our 7 million pount books that we have to carry. What sucks is that we honers kids have seperated classes so we have to go from advisory (crappy version of free time) TO science TO reading TO math THEN to lunch (yes, we have to carry our books to lunch) THE BACK TO math and then FINALLY TO language arts. PE we get to leave out books at advisory. Now off the topic about me and our crappy luck on to the humiliating part.

WE BARLY HAVE ANY PRIVLAGES ON THESE COMPUTERS. We barly could have downloaded google earth and couldn't download google shetch up. The only way to get torrent tracker on this computer (yes, I am typing on it right now) is to get uTorrent without the .exe. Wait, it gets better, the fu*ken goverment canceled our anti-virus and we don't have enough privlages to instal our own store bought or pirated anti-virus so we are total open. I haven't downloaded anything or even went on this computer over one weekend and when I turned the puppy on it was full of pop-ups trying to make me download their "anti-virus" but the best part is right up next.

I just have pop-ups and some of my friends got it way worse than me because they get a bout 20 pop-ups every time they open the ol- Iexplorer (don't ask to use firefox because the again, we don't got enough privlages to install it) but nothing compares to what happened to one of my friends. She litterally go porn Icons on her desktop. She said she didn't download or clip on anything an I belive her cus she isn't the type to lie or watch porn (but she does get you into a WTF moment once-in-a-wile) She go two porn icons on here desktop, one is lesbien and the other is gay porn (don't ask me how I know this) Every time she deletes it it comes back a second later and she get a ton of porn pop-ups even on the school's website. I told her to take it to the math teacher (a.k.a the computer fixer uper) and you know what he told here. HE TOLD HER THAT MAYBE SHE (sry, caps lock) was looking at inaproprate webstes and downloading stuff she isn't sopose to. All I could say when she lold me this was wow, I wa just serprized. Now what's cool about that program that they have so teachers can soo what the student is doing is that it can also control the student"s computer. On the spot I got storta pissed and went to his classroom afterschool but he left already. I was going to go to his classroom and say to his face that maybe HE was comtroling HER computer and HE was watching porn But after that day I sorta forgot about doing that and never did

Well, the wole point of this thread is to go it out and to let people know this. Please, discuse how you feel about when happened. I did not make this up and I feel pretty dam imbarased that the school or goverment is stupid enough to cancle our anti_virus (AVG). ALSO, gateway is now NOT fixing ANY laptops broken or damaged. My friend friend gave his laptop to gateway for fixing because nothing showed up when he logged on in the first few weeks into it still hasn't comeback along with many other kids that sent in there's.

Now to press the little "post new topic" button and find out what's making the audio ads. WOW I WROTE A TON

Man id just try to open it up, but id make sure that its possible to put it back togetther, also like suggested from the above try some live CD's, also is the OS on those laptops Win XP, try logging into the administrator user, this can be done in many ways the easiest being booting up in safe mode. If there is a password on the administrator user reset it by opening up "RUN" found in the start menu and then tupe "control userpasswords2", then reset the password

Also try booting up into safe mode, you may have more privileges once doing so. Anyway, is this whole laptop thing making you do better at school, sounds like a waste of time, $ £, and effort.

if the monitoring is done by something crappy as WINVNC this can be cancelled/quit easily in task manager to gain that little bit of privacy back lol
smile.gif

it will have a WINVNC icon like this >>

on the taskbar .....a lot of places I know use it for remote monitoring its cheap a$$ software but easy to temporarily defeat!

as above if the laptop will boot a LINUX live disk (may have to change bios to boot cd first although if this is locked too then your outta luck

urg, I don't know what is more stupid, how restricted they are or the fact you are not given texbooks in ebook format!

just format it and put ubuntu or similar on it. if the bios is locked open it and jumper the bios reset pins with a screwdriver. its quite a simple operation to do, the only real danger is shorting something else, or slipping and breaking a dozen traces on the motherboard. which is of course something i have never accidentally done _>

I wish my school had those, I would really like to hack into such a thing. Probably a really shitty security implementation.

Then remove the GPS module so they can't track where you're going.
blink.gif
Or make it output some crazy values. Seriously, what a violation of privacy.

Do you watch the Simpsons? If they have it tracked like Bart's cell phone, you could take out the chip and tie it to a bird.

I'm pretty sure it would be easy to boot a CD/DVD of linux and uninstall Windows.

Or Add & Remove programs/Program files folder.

I wish our school had this system, it would be fun.

Tracking the thing via GPS would require a system to send the data to somewhere. I can't really imagine they are paying quite a hefty amount by sending the data via HSDPA / WiMax / whatever for all units I can only assume they use wireless/wired networking (internet).... simply run the live CD which probably clears out any problem you may have. If you don't like that install it on an USB stick or something.

Probably best:
Make an image of the current installation, and then just put a new install on there

Actually it's monitored by a program called insight.

Anyway, I will try to do all the things you guys said to do but I can't open it up, I think it's straped to the mother board or something cus I tryed but I was afraid of using too muck force or I'll breaking it.

Easy to crack, but why bother?

Get an Eee 901 Linux for yourself and use the school laptop just for school.

Why bother with monitored laptops?

(Also, with a bit of hacking, you can get a 3g chip into the 901, turning it into a real netbook.)

It's cooler to "beat the system"
