GBAtemp Blogs Minor Update

If you're one of the 2600+ users who have a blog on GBAtemp, you may like to hear that we have decided to add an extra option to the blogging system.

Blog.jpg

We are now allowing blog owners to delete comments on their own blog entries. Everyone is now a moderator of their own blog. This has been requested by a lot of blog owners, and after a long discussion with the staff we decided to enable it. Of course, this comes with a few ground rules:
  • You are only allowed to delete comments that directly infringe forum rules, such as comments you deem insulting, offensive, etc.
  • Please do not delete posts that merely contradict your opinion, you must allow people to express themselves even if you don't agree with them - as long as they do it in a reasonable and civilized manner.
  • For users who comment on blog entries: if you feel that your comment has been unfairly deleted, please 'report' the blog entry and explain what happened. The staff may restore the comment if they deem it necessary.
  • Users who abuse the comment deletion functionality will receive warns, and may end up having their blog suspended.
  • Be aware that comments are never actually deleted, they are only hidden from view.
  • Please note that the "delete" function is only open to users who are in the "Members" user group, i.e. users who have a post count equal to or greater than 100.
The second new functionality is that you can "customize your blog" - by giving your blog a title and description. - seems like this was already possible, even though the permission was disabled.

Finally, please remember that blogs are a personal space - for personal discussions. Do not post in your blog threads that should be posted on the forums. Blogs are a good place to talk about yourself and your own life events, but remember that this community is mainly based on an active Forum, so make sure to keep the Forum alive :)

as far as I know the permission was disabled in the group permissions.
I enabled it a few minutes ago.

Mine already has a custom name/description. I haven't changed it in many months.

Didn't we have this before and it was such a catastrophic failure it was removed within a week?
I forget.
Either way it sounds like more work for the mods, if anything. I can see a lot of people fighting over their comments being deleted. People are very sensitive about that.

The first and most important of these options: we are now allowing blog owners to delete comments on their own blog entries.
YES! FINALLY!
Erm, I mean...

I thought we could already do this? My blog has been named "Warp Zone" for a while now.

the permission was disabled and I can say that with 100% certainty, now did it have any effect or not? of course I'm not doubting your words :)
I will edit that part in the original post then.

That's neat, not like i'll ever be using it but it will be fun to see the fallout over it.

No doubt on the second part. My general policy here would be think very long and hard about deleting anything that is not pure spam (as in there to sell stuff). That said I can happily treat it as fodder for the calculation of how to assess someone's worth in debate if someone is going to go around overreacting.

Considering how a large number of people are nowadays treating everyone who disagrees with their opinion (that somehow is factual despite evidence against it) as being offensive or insulting them, I can see those two rules contradicting each other a lot:rofl2:

    Most websites usually has cookies.
  • lwiz @ lwiz:
Then really only other thing I can imagine is that "Deleted User XXXXXX" still shows the sig with personal website/gamer profile or whatever, but I'd think sigs are disabled anyway for deleted users
  • lwiz @ lwiz:
Couple of ones I do run don't have the blurb, as we only run domain local cookies for keeping login data etc. (no google or whatever) and those are legal under GDPR without any extra notification.
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
I assume they just have whatever cloudflare has
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@lwiz, When accounts get banned, email address and everything else is still logged, but not for deleted users (except for their profile picture and banner if they have one.)
  • lwiz @ lwiz:
^this might be an issue, although keeping the details for preventing further misuse probably falls in to the fair use clauses
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
Temps been around since 2002 I'm sure they know what they're doing lol
  • lwiz @ lwiz:
Yeah. Of course wherever the site is located GDPR brought in further complications concerning the personal data of EU citizens
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
An entire data wipe just for one user sounds silly on any website
  • lwiz @ lwiz:
There are people demeding silly things because they're specail snowflakes and "in the know" even if actually clueless
  • lwiz @ lwiz:
*demanding - hate the keyboard of this lappy
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
Well a site owner could say they deleted everything and still keep records of it not saying this site would just that they easily could
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
Plus other users quote information so they have to go in and delete every quote they made to that user as well
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
And that has what lead to data breaches, because the companies lack the ethics of keeping their security up-to-date. They fail to understand and respond to protocols whenever they're told.
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
Wanting just your data gone from a website doesn't have much to do with security unless two users leaked personal info admins shouldn't have to get involved
  • lwiz @ lwiz:
Well the user can demand to see all the data that's stored on them, and GDPR demands this in "reasonable timeframe". Even one month is reasonable. And as said, you don't have copyright on your part of "collaborative creation" so there isn't any law requiring the deletion of posts (and ruining the threads in the same time).
    +1
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
Which is also silly within forums because you should already know the data you put in
  • lwiz @ lwiz:
(unless the said posts contain information directly doxxing that
    person)
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
Yeah if a person is under actual life threat or info stolen that's when higher ups should step in not just wah I don't want to be part of this site anymore
  • lwiz @ lwiz:
Yup. Anyway, sleeptime for me, g'nite!
