Hardware GBA Backlight! (AGB-001)

I've noticed the same with the GBA I did myself. I don't see it on the GBA I got pre-modded, but I definitely know what you are talking about. I think you'll have to adjust the small pot they mention in the guides, but I'd wait for confirmation from someone here. Wiggy probably knows what's causing this.

Oh good to know there is probably a fix. It's a wiggy mod that I bought, and I did email him today about it. So I'll patiently wait for a reply before I go muck it up on my own. ;)
 
I got impatient and took it apart and fiddled with that pot adjustment. Its all good now. I was wild and turned it all the way both ways with wild abandon for my screen safety! :D I wasnt sure where to leave it so I put it in exactly in the middle between bad looking one direction, and bad looking the next. Play tested for awhile and im all happy now.

I actually find the brightness a bit too much, so I'm going to add the switch mod, then I'll be 100% happy with it.

On vertical scroll the image has some sort of "slow refresh" that causes a interlace problem.

The screen flickers in both GBA and GB/GBC modes? In what brightness setting is your GBA was set? Try to adjust the potentiometer of your GBA to reduce the interlacing.

It flickers in gb/gbc mode only from what i could tell.
The brightness setting was low.

Is there any chance of damaging the screen ajusting the potentiometer?

It's also happening on my GBA. No flickering in GBA mode but it flickers in GB/GBC mode. I've set mine on higher brightness and the flickering was eliminated in GBC mode. In GB mode, the flickering was still there but it's weaker than the lower brightness setting. About to the pot, just adjust it until the interlacing is less visible. Don't set it on max or else, you may shorten the life of your LCD.

Any one else test the voltage on the backlight points from an AGS-101 AGT mobo.. with no load i get 17.5V... on two different multimeter.
if i use a led to put it under load it drops to about 3.1V, but the brightness button does nothing to voltage seemingly (this is probably something to do with the led i was using).

Did you checked it with DC or AC voltage? Feels like the current supplied for the backlight is not purely DC. Too bad I returned my AGS-101 to my friend and I forgot to check it before returning it. What's the voltage reading when the LCD is plugged in?
 
KipMudz thanks for the advice now the interlacing is barely visible and the flicker in gb mode is weaker too.

But does anyone know why it flickers in gb mode?

I wonder if has something to do with the different voltage of GB, GBC and GBA modes. I heard that GB mode runs at 5-6 volts while GBA mode runs at 3 volts. IDK about GBC mode.

Big thumbs up to Zerey! I got 2 kits from him yesterday and finished upgrading my other 2 GBAs to bright editions! He was a pleasure to deal with.

Here is a family shot of all my bright screen GBAs :D The red one on the left is a Wiggy one I impulse bought when I found his site. Over all good work, but it was very dirty and needed the pot adjusted, but I love his work on the case, so overall Im pleased. The mod is very easy to do with only 1 wire to solder. All 3 have the glass lens and it makes such a difference.

Hey everyone. I received my pre-built modded gba from Zerey today but there's an issue, don't know if any of you have encountered it. The backlight level is too low. It's hard to play games like that, I sould have been very happy as I received it but... well, can't be. Is there a way to increase the brightness level? As far as I know, there are two points on the board of the device to solder the strings of the screen onto, would that kind of switching fix the problem?

I'd appreciate it a lot if anyone could help out, I need some guidance. Thanks in advance.
 
maybe its not a brightness issue, i suspect it's a contrast issue, but just to be sure could you post a photo of your screen?
If it is just a contrast issue you just need to regulate the potentiometer on your gba

The GBA SP brightness level is at low and even then it's clearly birghter. The issue is a brightness level issue I believe, I guess it's about the voltage source of GBA AGB model (fill me in if anyone knows better). I wonder if it could be increased by switching the soldering point.. Or if there are any experts of the matter here, could you tell if this level is sourced by the point 1 or 2?

it is definitely not the correct voltage, I'm going to test the voltage from the point i used and the point on the AGT mobo soon when i put a new shell on the AGB-001 i did this mod to.
If i can find a suitable point for a higher brightness level i'll let everyone here know.

well i supose that when he instaled the screen on your gba he soldered to the high brightness point, can you open the gba and check it for yourself?

I also had an issue with my gba but i soldered it myself and i had no problem with the brightness lvl i had a problem with a intercing efect on vertical motion that got better after adjusting the potentiometer (that also increased the contrast lvl and the brightness )
