hi guys,

We just purchased a new 3DS XL with system version 6.20-12U.
do i need to manually update it to use gateway 3ds or leave as is and use sky 3ds?
thanks!
well we don't knw for certain what FW range GW will cover with the new exploit, could be 7.x-9.2 but their last update suggests they where still adding support for even lower FW's too, so gateways new FW may work on 6.x too, but i would say if you can update to at least 7.x-8.1 (that's as high as you can go atm with on cart updates, unless you update to 9.4, in which case you would loose gateway as an option)

but either card, its your choice, personally gateway has more features and is cheaper, but just wait until the update is out before ordering so you dont get bored with the eternal wait :P

if i had to make an educated guess id say update to 8.1 if you have a card that requires it :)

ill wait for next annoucement.
also is there a way to manually update to certain version(ie. 6.2 to 7 or 8 or 9), i understand that i should not connect to wifi since it will update to latest version.

yeah you need a retail card that contains that update i.e smash bros has 8.1 built in.....i would say just wait though, i would guess they will be supporting 5.x-9.2 with the new updated, based on what they said in the latest update

There is not currently a game with 9.x on it but there are some with 7.x and 8.x

SKy3ds fitting my needs just fine. I have a DSTWO also so its a great combo..

GW and Sky will be dead once DSTWO+ comes out though..::lol:

I was thinking about getting either a sky3ds or a gateway for Christmas. I realize that Gateway doesnt support the latest firmware that Nintendo has recently pushed (9.40-21) and sky3ds does. I am pretty sure that gateway will update to the latest version soon. The thing that worries me is this: should I get a sky3ds because gateway has malicious code that can brick my system permanently, or get a gateway because it has more options such as homebrew and region free capabilities?

They need to now fix the 31 game/rom limit.
I thought I had more games on the card last week. I misspoke.
The Sky3DS cant write more than 31 games on each card. Sky3ds team said that they would fix it in an update. Hopefully, they can do this soon.

Other than that, its a great card. A real thing that actually works right now.

I love my sky3ds too. the 31 game thing upset me at first... but seriously... i got over it. I just put in the 15 games I want to cycle through the most in... and then remove..back up.. restore as I need to...

This card rocks.

Well, since so many people seem to be giving the Sky3DS side of things a good, thorough tongue bath: I suppose I should mention that I very much enjoy my R5SDHC. It's a clone of the red button Sky3DS, but it does the job, even with the latest writer and template from the Sky3DS team. It's been my favorite toy to play around with as of late, and I don't regret my purchase even a little.

Granted, I did buy the thing specifically so that I could help people on this site figure out how to get the 10+ rom stuff actually working on it and other cards. That doesn't bother me, though. It's a bit rough around the edges, but then again, so am I.

Just tired of waiting for gateway 3ds, two weeks, another two weeks, and maybe another...so i ordered the sky3ds from r4depot site. Now it's on the way now. I got enough of that kind of waiting. So .......

good choice and careful when u post in this thread due too many fan kids. You can buy both,it just cost ~120$

Nintendo's lack of activity is curious to me.

They released two updates since Sky3ds was released, neither of which blocked anything. They've had roughly two months to figure out how to block the card and they haven't done it yet. Nintendo usually doesn't wait, they have often published updates for "System Stability" that existed only to block cards.

They can't be waiting for GW's release to bundle the blocks since it already doesn't work on 9.3+, so they have no work to do there.

Curious indeed.

System security is a delicate balance. Too little means everyone can break in all at once, and too much can allow people to reverse-engineer methods of security patches to see what is broken and what isn't. Patches don't necessarily fix all issues around a specific exploit, so all overprotection does is point hackers at the most vulnerable parts of the system. Eventually, they'll figure out an exploit the company never thought of.

Let them work it out for themselves. They're big boys...

Lol weeks? Try years & decades, human life times. Won't regret the Sky3ds

So if you don't care about online play should you just go ahead with sky3ds? Do future 3DS games require specific firmwares? Assuming Nintendo blocks Sky3DS ina further update, will I still be able to play any newer released games?
