Hey everyone! I have an original Wii (4.3U) and I followed the guide on wii.guide. My goal is to boot games from my USB SSD, but even though I followed the steps on that site, I'm running into problems.

1. I can't boot from my USB SSD on any other cIOS besides ones with a base IOS of 57. This problem is pretty much effects my entire setup. Whenever a guide tells me to install a cIOS, it'll say like
v10 beta52 d2x-v10-beta52
Base 56
cIOS slot 249 (this occurs on every slot)
cIOS Version 65535

I do the network install, and it even though I followed the instructions step by step for all three of the cIOSes, but none except cIOS 251 boot games. I have found out that iOS 251 works because it uses the Base IOS 58. When I reinstall the cIOS using the Base 58 in and cIOS, it will boot some of the games. The reason I can't just use Base 58 for everything, is that some games require Base 57 & 56 (Apparently Just Dance 2014, 2015 & 2016), but those don't boot the games. In WiiFlow, when booting, instead of getting the white loading bar at the bottom, it kicks me back to the Wii Flow splash. In USB Loader GX, I get a black screen and then it kicks me back to the Homebrew Channel. My SSD is a 128GB Kingston internal SSD connected with a SATA to USB Adapter. There's also an LED on the adapter so I can see when it's reading and writing to my drive. My SysCheck is here:

Hello,

You can test with this loader ==> Configurable loader v70 ==>https://wiidatabase.de/downloads/usb-und-disk-loader/configurable-usb-loader-mod/

Wiiflow lite (5.4.1) ==>https://github.com/Fledge68/WiiFlow_Lite/releases

on your syscheck report, you have this version of cios ==> d2x-v10beta52

You can try with this version (version 8 final) ==>http://www.mediafire.com/file/5ggh53tj9hhp1tr/d2x-cios-installer-3.1-v6-v7-v8-v10-wii.7z/file

and install them like this and see the result? ==>
IOS249 [57] (rev 21008, Info: d2x-v8finale): Trucha Bug, NAND Access, USB 2.0
IOS250 [56] (rev 21008, Info: d2x-v8finale): Trucha Bug, NAND Access, USB 2.0

You can always return to the installation of cios d2x with version 10 beta 52.

Your USB support is well formatted in FAT32 with this software ==>http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm

and then use "" wii backup manager "" to manage your games. Because a simple copy and paste of your games may not work

It may be your external hard drive, which does not work with wii, if you can test another USB medium and see the result.

Thanks for your response! I installed both of the cIOSes that you mentioned, and when using the USB SSD, I get the "Device is not responding" with the CFG mod you gave me. I also used a 64GB USB Flash Drive (formatted as FAT32), and it gives me the same error. I also used the other USB port just to make sure but both still don't work. I'm going to format the drive with your app and see if it works.

So, I formatted the both drives, and they still don't work without base IOS 58.

Hello.:)

Please be sure your SSD is initialized as MBR Drive:

img_56e628d28bd5b.png.pagespeed.ce.QTfQCBsn-5.png img_56e6297886fee.png.pagespeed.ce.OAzLplkJBg.png

Did your SSD Case have an Power Supply ?
Maybe it needs more Time to Initalize.:(
If if has no Power Supply, you can try to Power on the Wii with the attached SSD.
Boot into the Homebrew Channel or Wii Menu please.
Wait 20-30 Seconds and then try USBLoader GX.
Please look in the USBLoader GX Settings if your SSD is initialized:

Settings - Hard Drive Settings -> Game/Install Partition
You can also try the "Sync FAT32 FS Info" Option too.

P1360462.JPG P1360463.JPG

If your USB Stick is not recognized, that is nothing unusal. You can try to format it with WBFS (please Note - this is NO Solution, only a Workaround please).
and please always use the WiiBackup Manager for the Game Transfer.

Good Luck
Thank you.:)

Hey, sorry for not responding, I didn’t see any notifications. I tried using a separate power supply and using the FAT32 Sync FS option and it still didn't work. I posted my new SysCheck below

Thank you.:)

After you have all Points checked,it is unfortunately "near" nothing left.....:(

It was not asked but to get sure:
Did you use the Port 0 for the USB Device ?
728px-Wii-USB-port.jpg

Your USBLoader GX Loader´s IOS is set to 58 or 249 ?
Settings/Global Settings - Loader Settings -> Loader´s IOS please try 58 if it is set to 249 and vice versa please.

Base 57 has better Game Compatibility,Base 56 is the "Backup" if 57 failes to load.
Base 58 is not usual as "standard" Base for the Games.:(

So 249[57] and 250 [56] should work in 99 Percent of the Cases. Many Users report the 249[56] and 250 [57] works better on the USBLoader GX,so it will be.:)
Please try this 2 Sets in Combination with Loader´s IOS 58 or 249 please.

You can also try the Configurable USBLoader to boot your Games,it shows the used IOS on Startup so you can configure the Games in USBLoader Gx per Hand if needed.

P1360469.JPG

Please Note that not all Games work with 249.

I am confident, one of the Combinations will work for you.

Please use the d2x cIOS installer to complete your cIOS installtion on 247 and 248 too, some "Shovelware" Games maybe need one of this.

I really hope you get a Solution for you now.

Thank you and
Good Luck.:)

P.S. If you want to know more about cIOSes and how it works please read about here:

Thanks! I tried the cIOS 249 and 250 combo and when I launch any game it kicks me back to the homebrew channel instead of just freezing. This also happens with cIOS 247 and 248. I can confirm my drive is in the right port and it’s formatted as MBR and NOT GPT. CFG won’t load my SSD no matter what IOS I use. I can’t get USB Loader GX to find my drive when I use IOS 249 as the loader, only IOS 58 works.

Hello again, I hope you and everyone else reading this is doing well. I switched from a flash drive to an old 250GB laptop Hard Drive with a SATA to USB adapter. I still get the same problems as I had before with the flash drive. I have two different adapter and I'm using an external power source, so that can't be it either. I have the drive formatted as FAT32 and WBFS, and that still didn't solve it. The only way I can boot games is with the USB Loader GX's loader setting set to "IOS 58" and WiiFlow's cIOS setting as "IOS 251", and finally changing the games that work to boot from IOS 251. When booting into WiiFlow, the Activity LED is blue and blinks a couple times (inconsistently) and then is solid before WiiFlow says "No games found in usb1:/wbfs" The same thing happens with USB Loader GX except that says "Waiting for HDD"

edit: Homebrew also recognizes the HDD

Thank you.:)

After you have all Points checked,it is unfortunately "near" nothing left.....:(

It was not asked but to get sure:
Did you use the Port 0 for the USB Device ?

Hello.:)

Thank you for your Update.
A mver sad to hear, you have still no Luck.I am very sorry for you....

If you like you can try an older Version from the USBLoader GX (r1271 or r1268).
https://sourceforge.net/projects/usbloadergx/files/Releases/New revisions (3.0+)/

Maybe you have more Luck with your HDD(s) and/or your Adapter with this.:)

Good Luck
Thank you.:)
Unfortunately, I still didn't get it to work. I just read on another forum however, that USB 3 wouldn't work. All of my adapters are USB 3 so I'd assume that's the problem even though they still have external power.

If that doesn't fix it I would just start over completely and use modmii
I just started over with ModMii and my drive still only works on 251 or bade 58. I'm just low key so confused as to why it would only work with those IOSes.

Hey Bowden. Hopefully you're not still struggling with this. If it makes you feel any better I'm been having the exact same problem as you for the last week or so. It's funny how your problem is identical to mine. Just wondering if you ever found a solution? Or did you give up on it? I wouldn't blame you. I'm about to throw in the towel myself. This soft modding project was supposed to be fun. But it's been a pain in the arse instead.

Ultimately it probably boils down to a less compatible hdd. There are 2 things I would suggest you try that aren't listed in this thread already.

First, try loading with cios 222-224 and see if one of those also work. If you need help installing these (OP already had them), you can use modmii, note there's an option to included hermes cios's as part of recommended cios's that you should enable if using a wizard to install them.

Second, try formatting the drive as wbfs (using wii backup manager) instead of fat32. You would forfeit many of the advantages of fat32, but it often leads to greater hdd compatibility, so worth a shot.

Hi XFlak. Thank you very much for your response. I think you might be on to something regarding the HDD. I'm using a Samsung M3 1tb which is listed as compatible in the GBATemp compatibility list (Though not confirmed) It works with Homebrew and with USB Loader GX but only when loader settings are set to ios58 and ios251(base 58) But all games have issues (e.g: Complete game freeze, stuttering cut scenes, or black screen freeze mid game) One exception is Mario Party 9. I have tried another HDD WD Elements 1tb which didn't work at all. Yes, I did try formatting in wbfs format but also without success. I thought I did install Cios's on 222-224 (although I thought were out-dated) but I don't think my SysCheck indicates that I have. So I'll give that another go. I've included my SysCheck here below also for some insight. Thanks again. I'm considering buying an internal hdd usb2.0 with a case usb2.0. Do you think that would help?

Your cios 251 with base 58 is actually v10 beta 53. I would try installing v10 beta 53 with base 57 to slot 249 and with base 56 to 250 (currently u have v10 beta52 installed to these slots)

Normally v10 beta52 is recommended (or v8 final which is basically the same thing), but cuz you say base 58 works for u, I'm wondering if it's not the base but actually the version that is improving the compatibility for u

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea

  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
