I realize that this is a pre-release screenshot (v1.0.0 U wasn't released) straight from Big N, but has anyone found a way to make/save screenshots from the Wii U Gamepad?

If it's pre-release, it was probably on a development unit, which quite possibly have additional features not present on the retail model.

Having said this, it's possible Nintendo decided to include a screenshot function, I would assume if so it'd be a button combination; if you have one, try pressing random buttons till it works :P

I'm almost certain I read about gamers being able to take and exchange screenshots on the Wii U. The only problem is it's a difficult term to search for, every site just returns results for screenshots of games.

Use a camera for now, I don't think there is a screencap function and there probably won't be until Wii-U mode exploits rear their heads (could be a long effing time)

The EXIF data reports that image came out of Photoshop (CS5 specifically), and it has a title in the EXIF data as well ("System Update Icon") which is not something that would be set by the original capture, it's what it was titled as when it was being edited for the website/report. The data reports that the image was originally 1280x720, but the actual image measures 700x394, so it was at least resized, and not a power-of-2 thing (it's 0.54, not half).

In addition to the fact that that image has been modified, it isn't a screenshot from the pad as evidenced by the resolution, the originating is 1280x720, but the pad's resolution is supposedly 854x480.

So it looks like it might just be an HDMI frame capture from the Wii U itself (not the pad) that was photoshopped for the site.
