Hey, all you aspiring game designers. GameMaker Studio, the engine that fueled Hotline Miami, Spelunky, and game of the generation Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden (I'm only half kidding about that "game of the generation" part) is currently free.

That's right, free. It costs zilch, zero, nada, and other such words for nothing.

This is normally where I'd put the news text, but the main site is currently down, presumably from the massive influx of traffic. I'll link to it below, however, so you guys can try later.

This is what the page should look like.

Just download and install the program (make sure you select the "Beta Update" option). You'll be given several options to choose from, so make sure you select "Register For A Free Studio License" to get the full free version.

Now, this is normally a $50 dollar value, so you might want to hop on this while/if you can. And who knows? Maybe you'll design the next indie darling, and you'd only have to pay with your social life!

Woah, this must be a coincidence I just finished my personal project (a year long project for school) yesterday as it was a game I made on game maker. In fact, I just presented it it 5 hours ago!

The blog is down, but the actual download site is up and working fine: http://www.yoyogames.com/studio/download
From PC Gamer:
To get your free copy of the Standard Edition, download the Free version of GameMaker Studio from this page. Once installed, a dialogue box will pop up, asking which update stream you want to draw from. Choose the Beta channel, and let the game install the latest beta release. From there, you can pick the option to register the Standard Edition. Enter you email address, and you'll be sent an activation code.

The download site is giving me "500 - Server Error". Does it have to be downloaded from this particular page, or is there an alternate site I can get it from?

Its free for now...until you have to update to a version that forces you to pay or lose most of the "good" features.

FYI you MUST accept the version update that first comes up. It took me 20 mins to figure out where to register.

'Crack plz' when that happens, not that hard to do I guess.
Nice advertisement, for a hopefully nice tool. It's good to give something away for free from time to time, in my opinion ;)

The page doesn't load, just getting error 500. :(
Just wait and try again. The servers are overloaded but I got a download eventually.

I just used Steam, but it's not working right. I got a Setup Error when running the NET Framework installer, and am having trouble getting my license key to work. If I try opening the program anyways, I end up with the free version started up, and get an error message right off the bat. I haven't tried actually putting anything together yet, though.
