GameStop hikes refurbished PS5 Pro price to $1399.99, above MSRP

Amidst the shortages, possibly fueled by the upcoming release of GTA VI, GameStop is reportedly raising the price of refurbished PS5 Pro consoles from $800 to $1399.99 USD, so now they cost more than a brand-new one at ticket price.

Supposedly, a Redditor who works at the retailer leaked a memo telling employees that used consoles priced above new ones is intentional.

Due to the ongoing chip shortages and with Tom's Hardware citing a 500% rise in RAM prices over the past 12 months; new PS5 Pro's are hard to come by so this just appears to be GameStop cashing in. It also suggests demand is being pushed up by Grand Theft Auto VI, which launches this November.

If you just want a PlayStation, the standard PS5 Digital and Disc editions are said to still be selling at or close to MSRP.

Would you ever pay above asking price for a used console, or is this just a poor look for GameStop?

Are they seriously scalping these because of the jailbroken prowess they can provide now? Or is the the "you want GTA VI but took too long getting a console now you'll have to go through us fuck you" tax?

Genuinely hope there's a gigantic videogame market crash. Literally burn the whole thing down.

The AAA space is somewhat in one already with GTA VI to offer an olive branch..however this could be a curse. After what is seen in GTA VI makes, all greedy AAA shareholders are going to demand their games reach those numbers as well in terms of sales and money made...and when they don't, n they'll be branded as "failures" which could possibly make them reconsider continued funding = game market crash. Sony is already shitting the bed with nothing compelling and Microsoft is....well let's say theyre in a team rebuild season. Nintendo is in a different market and wouldn't be affected by this

Glad I got mine last Christmas for $700.
I paid about $750 (converted from Pounds to Dollars) with the Disc Drive, 1TB SSD, and 3rd party PS 30th Anniversary faceplates.

Still feels too much money for a console. The PS5 Pro better be worth it. 😅

It was an awesome place, when they used to give away swags, posters, and keychains with every game you buy or pre-order. Their business model changed and they will be burn the company to the ground soon.

Welp good thing I was never interested in a PS5...

Also why the hell would I buy this refurbished from Gamestop? From what I hear cartridge based systems are fine, like my new 2ds XL I got years ago from them, but disc ones are always brok-

PS5 Pro doesn't even come with a disc drive

Oh. PS5 Pro doesn't have a disc drive?
... Huh. Didn't know that TBH. Still, I've heard consoles from them refurbished are trash.

The ability to jailbrake PS5s is not going to drive the price of used consoles higher. Like ever. Very few people ever do that relative to the number of consoles sold. This is 100% the GTA 6 tax, and although I expected this from Sony, and I'm actually really surprised Gamestop was smart enough to join in via USED consoles! Games and consoles are less and less a percentage of their business, so they can take the backlash. One last good screwing of the gamer community before their stores transition completely away from consoles and physical games.

Good thing Sony paid Rockstar tens of millions for their "GTA VI plays best on PS" campaign keeping it off PC for 18 months or Sony would be in real trouble. Unfortunately millions of casual gamers who didn't upgrade from PS4 this generation are going to feel the need to play GTA6 immediately (for whatever reason) and will pay scalper prices on eBay that far exceed this next month and through at least the end of the year.

It's just kind of shocking, even during the RAMCopalypse, to see a major company like Gameslop become the leading and most brazen PS5 scalpers around.

Just think, if you bought from GameStop, you are supporting them. How the heck are they still in business?
They are in business even as gamers completely transitioned to digital and didn't care about physical games because they wisely moved away from those shrinking markets and fully into the "let's sell useless shit, like stuffed animals and videogame action figures to these manchilds" market. Have you been in a Gameslop lately? It's embarrassing.

And successful. Wall Street loves their strategy and growth. There's no writing on the wall for Gameslop; they're doing great and no incelboycott is going to slow them down.

Artifical pump scheme on Reddit a few years ago that bumped their stock value arbitrarily, and the executives when full idiot mode with it. Stock != Success

Gamestop has repeatedly done this, the 3DS spiked, the PS3 spiked, the PS4 spiked, and games related to the exploit spiked, like Cubic Ninja. This is not their first time doing it.

I think the Limited Edition 30th Anniversary Edition did come with a Disc Drive, but it also cost nearly $1k so it better have one.

Crazy prices for these consoles.
