How do friend codes work in DS games? Is the code held in the rom data or on your DS? I have an official Final Fantasy III DS game cart and an Acekard with FF3 on it. Would I be able to transfer mail between my game cart and flash cart to unlock the Onion Knight?

I tried it on mah cart, and apparently the friend code and name of my Ds didn't add up, so it's giving me a new one.
So apparently friend codes are randomized. Sweetnessness.
EDIT: In case anyone is interested nas to how i did it, I downloaded an FF3 save and copied it to 7 different save slots on my Acekard. I connected to Nintendo WFC, got a new friend code for each save slot, and added those friend codes to my legit cart. Now I have the Onion Knight! ^^
