Sounds good wazmo. I'm glad to hear that you are making progress.

Bad news though. While I was drawing the menus I got a phone call from work. They want to be there in 3 hours. I haven't slept since around 7am, so I'm already really tired. So, I guess I can't work on this anymore for the next three days. I'll check back in every so often though to see how things are moving.

*sigh* I hate working the night shift.

I had better go to sleep, or I will end up getting fired for sleeping on the job. I check in when I get off work though.

@wazmo
I'll have to wait until tomorrow to send you my new sprites. Sorry!
Also, I'm not exactly sure which ones I have sent you. Please give me a list of all of the sprites I have posted here, but have not emailed to you. Thanks.

heres an updated version of Fretfury! with better graphics (and a no grip version)

Hey I'm back from work. I just wanted to say something before I go to sleep (I hate sleeping during the day
frown.gif
)

In the latest demo the notes go under the fret buttons instead of going over them like they should. I just wanted to point that out.

Also, the sprites on the ds screen don't have as many different shades as put in the original sprites. This make the quality a lot lower. So, is there a way to make it so that the sprites look the way they are supposed to, or can homebrew just not support that many colors? It should not be the ds as retail games have excellent graphics and wide color schemes. So unless it is just the way homebrew is made (again, I don't know how all of that works) there should be a way to make the sprites look a lot better on the ds.

@wazmo
I don't want to tell you how to do the coding (I'm not at all the leader of the project
smile.gif
), but I just thought of something. If I am wrong, don't worry about it, but if I am right, please take my words into consideration. Here goes. Are you cutting the quality of the sprites to save on file size? It makes sense to keep the file size down, but not at the cost of the graphics. If people are willing the games over 100MB on there cards then why can't our game be just as big? Not trying to complain or anything, I just want to know why the sprites look the way they do on the ds. Again, I'm not accusing you of anything, so don't take this the wrong way. I just thought that something like this could be why the sprites look different.

Also, I will send you the sprites when I wake up.

Well I'm going to go to bed now (been up for 24 hours). Bye!

@wazmo
Is the left screen gonna remain orthographic as it is, or will you make it 3D (like the original game?)

why do I get a feeling that the homebrew bounty will be heading in this direction?
Hire a professional to do your art. (i.e. ask nicely, most people do anything for publicity)
It looks good at the moment! I hope that this will continue (unlike SSBR)

actually the reason the quality of the graphics is cut is because the homebrew can only use 256 bitmap file type and when i convert it in paint it cuts the quality.

im not sure but if i do make it 3d it wont be till a much later version.

I dont mind converting songs to work here, just point me in the direction of how to do it and i'll be off!

alright time for my absolute BEST demo ever (im almost ready to call it version 1.0). in this demo the notes dont loop anymore and you can strum them!!!!!!

now all i have to do is add the ability to use .txts and add music.

by the way Penguindefender do you think you could make a new main menu. one that stands out more.

also could you make an option for it to load the songs and everything, then wait for the grip, and not load/save anything. That way us with Slot-2 cards can play it? Will just be like, "please insert your slot-2 card now to save" you know like the annoying switch disc for cut-scenes in some (older) games.

Awesome!!!

@wazmo
Sorry I didn't give you the sprites yet. It'll have to wait till I wake up (most likely around four). Oh, and for the menu, should I stick with the red/black flames theme (it does not really matter if you want me to change it at this point. I have only made the title screen.), or should I do something else? If you want me to do something new, what did you have in mind? Also, I'm going to try drawing some things in 256 format to see how they turn out. They should look exactly the same on the ds as they do on my PC, right? It is really too bad that the sprites can't look as good as the originals. What would happen if you left the sprites unconverted to 256 and put them in?

Also, the latest demo looks really great. We will have a fully functional FretFury in no time.
smile.gif
One thing though. It shouldn't matter though as it will not be in the final version, but sometimes when you strum the note noise will loop until you let go of the fret. You can also switch frets and the note noise will change, but it will still loop. Not sure if you already knew that.
smile.gif
Also the strings don't move yet. I really want to see how look in action, so I know if I need to make the strings bow out more. Thanks.

Sorry, one last thing. I noticed that strumming up and down (from a sideways perspective of the ds) does not register. I would be very greatful if you put this in. I can only play about one song in GHOT before I get extreme shoulder pain if I strum sideways (it's a long story).
smile.gif

EDIT: I just got done playing around with 256 format. I'm glad to know that I can now know what the sprites will look like in the ds before I submit them.
yaynds.gif

Hopefully we can figure out how to get full quality images, but if not, at least I can make the sprites from here on out look a little better.
smile.gif
Since I'm not used to using this format it is gonna be a little tougher to draw things out, but the lack of color choice should shorten the time it takes for me to complete sprites. One more thing. I really do not want to waste hours at my PC trying to figure out what colors I can and can't use, so could someone please find (or make) a color pallet of colors that will work in 256 format (colors that will not change at all when I convert the image to 256). I need various darkness levels of all of the colors of the rainbow
biggrin.gif
, odd colors (like brown), and a full black to white pallet. Thank you very much.

yep it will follow the style

yeah thats one of the bugs im trying to work out

QUOTE

oooooh i dont know if i can actually do that because if i did i would have to change ALOT of the code.

i might have found a way to use images other than 256 but im not sure yet.
yaynds.gif

I'm glad to know that there is still hope for better quality sprites. I am gonna hold off on making anything until we know if 256 is our only option or not.

So, is there any chance of using better quality sprites?

EDIT: I noticed that SSBR uses sprites that look pretty good. It is open source, so maybe you could see how they did it.
