I often wonder this too. I must have switched between JB and non-JB like 5 times so far. First I thought I wanted to try those emulators (especially GBA and PSX) but then I saw they were not free. What the fuck? They are free on every platform, but here I have to BUY them through Cydia? Fuck that.

You know that you can pirate Cydia apps, too?
When I had my touch, I jailbroke it, but refused to pay for emulators, or any other Cydia app. Or any apps at all.

If you're using the downloads provided by that program on Hackulous' repo then no you won't lose any money. Only in-app purchases or App Store purchases will incur charges.

My iPod is jailbroken and I love some of the tweaks. SBRotator 4.x is a great example. It works perfectly well and is fun to play with. I also have SwitcherMod which is very handy for freeing up memory and seeing what programs you have backgrounded (backgrounded programs are opaque while others are transparent). SBsettings is great for quickly turning off my WiFi when I leave the house. One thing not to expect is a wealth of great apps and games for free. Most of the games on Cydia are crap, best things for an iPod Touch are the tweaks to Springboard and emulators. Most of the extra apps are for WiFi tethering, unlocking apps which require a wi-fi signal to work on 3G, better messaging programs i.e. iPhone stuff.

Cydia, Activator (You can use the lock switch as a play pause), PIRACY, SBSetting, SSH, You can use SwitcherMod to add some nice feature to the multitasking, etc. etc
