Ecuador has granted asylum to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange two months after he took refuge in its London embassy while fighting extradition from the UK.
It cited fears that Mr Assange's human rights might be violated.
Foreign minister Ricardo Patino accused the UK of making an "open threat" to enter its embassy to arrest Mr Assange.

"The Ecuadorean ambassador is expected at the [foreign] ministry as soon as possible," said Anders Joerle, spokesman for the Swedish foreign ministry said.
"The accusations that [the Ecuadorean foreign ministry] has formulated are serious and it is unacceptable that Ecuador would want to halt the Swedish judicial process and European judicial co-operation."

It seems that the democratic governments of UK and Sweden has learned how to take some authoritarian measures. Hope Wikileaks survive now.

From what I understand (correct me if I'm wrong) Assange can get into a embassy car and not be arrested. As the car would be seen as an extension of Ecuadorian territory. The issue is getting into the car and than leaving the car.

I wonder what UK can do if the Ecuador president itself comes with his bodygards/army men and brings Assange to their car up to the airport and their plane...

The problem is getting him into the car since the Ecuador embassy is on the first floor, and everything else is UK property.

Is he accused of r(a)pe in Sweden ?
The rap(e) charges are a pile of bullshit. They want him over in Sweden so they can convict him and then extradite him over to the US where they will either lock him up for life or execute him.

It's even more ridiculous that the UK was threatening to raid the Ecuador embassy violating the Vienna Convention.

execute him.

I don't think that's how it works.
http://www.peopleokw...m/the_list.html

It's certainly possible although torturing him like Bradley Manning is another option.

So I'm seeing a bunch of right wing "entertainers" which are not immediately involved with politics, people who are basically disenchanted at this point with politics, and some army people. None of them have the power to do this.

I'm sure most of the nation would be okay with having the Dark Knight Rises shooter hung in the town square like Mussolini but that isn't happening.

Correct if I'm wrong here. The charges Assange is facing Swedan is over the use of condoms. Allegedly he agreed to use condoms with the women but he didn't. the sex itself was consensual. And the US had asked the Swedish prosecution department to look re-examine Assange's case after it was initially dropped. In the UK, I'm almost sure what Assange allegedly did wouldn't even reach a court.

RE: Storming the embassy. I can't see it happening, it would be a legal and diplomatic minefield. No one could be that stupid considering the possible implications. Saying that the thread to do so was fucking unprecedented.

Yes, Assange got sued for consensual sex with two women, without using condoms and I dont know why it is illegal in Sweden, but it is clearly an excuse to lock Assange.

The problem is (as Emigre mentioned) deceiving the women over the use of condoms. You know, lying about something that could lead to pregnancy or STDs. That's pretty serious.
