I'm using iSakureal, and when I look at the options screen before booting a GBA game, I notice there are two ways to boot up a GBA game: fast and patched. What exactly does this mean?

I am not entirely certain (no M3 myself) but GBA games are fairly difficult to patch on low end systems (like the DS) and can take a while.
Fast is likely a straight copy (used if you patched it on the PC for instance) while patched will search the rom (what takes the time) and then copy over.

Some people say that if you use fast load that the game doesn't save correcty. Patch load is supposed to stop that from happening.

patching copies the rom onto the expansion pack, while fast load just loads it in memory. fast load works fine most of the time but some games need to be played by using patch at least the first time you play them for it to be able to create save files. so mostly it has to do with certain games being able to save.
