And you know they produce garbage, since they all optimize for speed, not quality, right?

Commercial programs usually just throws in DPG encoding for the heck of it and as enarky said. They will always prioritize speed optimization over quality, as they always want to make it as userfriendly as possible (For the same reason you will never see a scene group encoding a movie with 'one click xvid' converting programs). You can never compare a program that adds DPG encoding as a feature, compared to a program that specializes in DPG encoding.
But so far I haven't heard any names, I hear program this, program that. So just for the heck of it, let's hear the name of the program you use.

I am just finishing video recording a hands-on review of this iPlayer plugin on my dstwo and I have tested out the following

- FLV (works)
- AVI (works)
- MKV (works)
- MOV (works but no sound)
- MP3 (works)
- 3GP (does not work)
- MP4 (does not work)

I will post a link to my video as soon as its done uploading and processing

Completely. Currently the DSTwo's features aren't that much better (as they're still an early release), but with the SDK and the release of their sources we're going to see a lot of improvement.

Ok, mkv and avi containers work. So do ogm and mov if you change the extension to avi or mkv. mpeg4 (divx/xvid) video at 640x480 or below works in an avi/mkv/mp4/ogm container (with renaming, if necessary). mp3, aac, and vorbis audio work fine as well. h.264 video has serious performance issues (lags like hell). don't know about sorenson (older flash videos) but probably not.

I'd have to agree, all of the edges are too jagged, it's not smooth like it should be, it's totally worth the wait of converting for better quality and smaller file size for me

If anyone wants a free, user friendly conversion program, I reccomend using Freemake Video Converter.

Tips:

Convert to .avi
Choose XVID
Choose MP3
Cap the file size at the size of the original file

If you do this, you'll get good quality video easily. I'm sure there's a better method, but this is the easiest I found. Also, if you have anime with a .mkv extension, it's super easy to convert it and keep the subtitles. Use "MKV extract GUI" and extract the subs. The convert the video using my above method. Rename the subtitle file so that it matches the name of your video, and change the extension to ".srt"

Example:

One Piece episode 467.avi
One Piece episode 467.srt

And keep them in the same folder. The subs will display and be easily read, and the video should look decent depending on the source.

How long did it take you to convert a regular anime episode Tonitonichopchop?

My computer isn't very good, but it took about 3/4 the time of the video I was converting to convert it. So for example, it took about 15 minutes to convert a 22 minute HQ anime episode. I just converted a 1 hour and 26 minute movie that was HD and it took about two hours. So it isn't too bad, especially if you let the program run over-night.
