I thought this game had been hyped up for ages as well. Now no-one even knows about it. Apparently it's an average dungeon-crawler that randomly changes as you play. It's big selling point is a dynamically moving dungeon (even when you're in that part of the dungeon, it will move about).
Think the stairs in Hogwarts, it changes as you play. Will check this out to see if it's any good, but according to reviews, it's just above average.

Huh, wasn't it delayed 'till December ? Nice surprise dump, can't wait to try it.
Side note : given nearly all of their recent efforts sold horribly in Japan (ASH and BD+ bombed pretty hard, and Away didn't even sell 2000 copies !), one gotta wonder how Mistwalker hasn't kicked the bucket yet.

Well, just played through the first dungeon, and though it's not quite what I expected, I like it quite a bit. At first I wasn't too impressed. The graphics are kinda "meh" and the game doesn't really direct you much to start. But after completing the first dungeon, I see a method to the madness. It seems to have a fun, tight formula in place.

Wow, finally. I've been waiting for this one for a while now. It has gotten some pretty good reviews, so I'm anxious to get started.

It's pretty good. It looks like it's heavy on presentation and atmosphere. It's sort of very Zelda like in it's look and characters.

As far as gameplay, it's a dungeon crawler with a time limit to get to the top or bottom part of the screen before one half is removed from the screen. You have to collect treasure and other items to level up and collect helper monsters before this all happens. It's a great new approach to an old genre.

I can see this staying on my card until I finish.

It's not really a bad thing for this game. Maybe you have to try it to see what I mean. You'll see one part of the screen shake and you'll just have to get to the other screen before it changes/shuffles. The levels will keep shuffling until you go down a level that leads to the next floor. It repeats if you don't go down so there's always time to collect all the items again if you miss any.

So you don't die from time running out to leave the shuffling screen. You die from the shuffle itself. The time is just the warning you have before the shuffle comes. Maybe I should have called it the shuffle countdown instead of a time limit. This is why I always suggest for people to try it themselves in case my words are misleading. There's no experience like your own experience.

I think I'm gonna stick with it. I played through some more this morning, and the second dungeon is quite a step up in difficulty...but then the third dungeon is easier. Only fought one boss so far, and though he was pretty simple, it was fun and he was cool to look at.

I like the production, though. They really made a nice, tight package here. Not sure how long before it gets old, but I like it. It also has a kind of simplified Pikmin thing going on with the flubongs (or whatever the heck they're called). Not much to it, but again, fun.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.
