It's most likely possible. There's a Orchestra patch for DQ8 on 3ds and I think DQ7 also
This is a pretty big stretch I think, but what are the odds people could not only patch the game with a translation, but also an orchestral music patch like what they're building out for the PC ver?

If you're going to inject the original script, make sure to keep things quiet until you're done. That's illegal use of copyrighted content and can/will get C&D'd.

Lol Square can't kill something that doesn't exist so just speak hypothetically. Honestly though, it's not like this will take the years it normally does to translate something so it should be a pretty short period of time anyway.

But please continue, because at this point the Switch port will be be a decade out and may of us want to play this portably. If I could do anything to help I definitely would.

Inb4 Square Enix kills this.

BTW @OP SQEX kills all publicly known fan translation projects. If you want your efforts to not be wasted, you need to keep it secret until it's done.

Yes but for that it is as easy as to post the downloadable file once it is ready and this shouldn't take long as the texts can be taken from the Windows version. The Final Fantasy hacked games for GBA and other platforms are still available for download. I would help but I lack hacking skills. We need to extract the texts from the Windows version and inject them into the 3DS game.

I think that the 3DS version looks the best, in between.

When projects are public, SQEX typically sends C&D BEFORE there's a patch ready.

And just reusing the texts from a different port is actually illegal

As have been already said, we just have to release the hacked game using the English texts, no need to create a website or a big project for that. This legal/illegal hypocrisy loop is not getting us anywhere. This is about extracting the English texts of the Windows version and injecting them into the 3DS version.

It's not a matter of hypocrisy. If you're doing something illegal, you can't use this website for it

I don't see anyone actually using this site for it. I see people discussing the possibility. A lot of people on this site jump even at even the mention of piracy as well and say we can't even discuss the idea of it and I don't understand it.

There are no links and no copyrighted material. I would assume the mods would let us know if and when a line and crossed just like usual.

Bottom line is nothing has been released and or used illegally at this point and this thread is purely discussion and hypothetical scenarios of dos and donts

If you don't feel comfortable here I suggest you to ignore this post and stop pestering. We aren't doing anything wrong.
Fine, ignore my warnings if you want. Not my problem if you get yourself banned breaking site rules.

"Warez" - ROMs, WADs, ISOs & CIAs

"Warez" is an internet term used to describe copyrighted software, game, film, music and data piracy.
  • We DO NOT HOST or PROVIDE ROMs/WADs/ISOs/CIAs; or link to websites that do contain ROMs/WADs/ISOs/CIAs.
  • We do not allow or condone sharing of title keys or any other form of copyrighted material or content.
  • Members may NOT ASK and MAY NOT PROVIDE INFORMATION or LINKS for and to places that provide ROM, WAD, ISO and CIA files in absolutely any way on our forum including PM (private message).
  • Members may also NOT mention torrent or warez-containing sites or channels by name or otherwise.
  • We do not condone piracy in any way.
  • Please go elsewhere if you only wish to download or share illegal files. The GBAtemp Forums are for discussionONLY.
These rules also apply to other "warez" too, not just ROM, WAD, ISO & CIA files; this includes (but is NOT limited to) - licensed and copyrighted software, code, movies, music, video games, magazines, comics, e-books, television shows, illegal torrents, etc. These rules also account for "keygens" and "cracks" including how to obtain, apply or install them.

Those are the most frequently broken rules, and are the most important. Failure to comply with these rules may result in an instant ban on your forum account. Ignorance of the rules is no excuse!

Which rule is being broke?

Although I would say this one is kind of being toed here:

All actions, moderation and administration of GBAtemp are decided by the staff only and are not open to debate.

No rule has been broken yet. The nature of a warning is to inform someone of future dangers. If you use the PC script, you cannot release here

1) It's perfectly fine to do a fan translation project, we cannot host the files however.
2) You can however release said tools you need to extract the files, since they aren't illegal. Only the usage.
3) No need to fight.

Well said. Now maybe we can get somewhere.

Basically, we can develop, support, discuss and/or share tools for translation projects like we do with anything CFW-related. The ONLY thing that we can't do on Gbatemp.net is to post the final results, that is, the translated game for download or a direct link to it. Now, as users above have said, we can go on. The 3DS version of Dragon Quest XI, the only one with dual visuals, needs translating.

There are multiple translation patches for games using the official PC translations and released here on GBATemp. Multiple Grisaia games (PC to Vita), Ever 17 (PC to PSP), and more. Those haven't been ruled against by mods, so why warn this specific project that hasn't even been released yet?

Also a way to get around a possible C&D would be to have the patcher do a check for the PC files before patching so there's at least some amount of purchase checking, assuming this is going to be an end-user patch to the game's rom itself. Committee of Zero did this kinda thing for their console to PC translation patches. It would technically not be distributing copyrighted material if it requires purchasing the official release in order to patch.

Another good point. There are a few little tricks like this to make it easier on the translation team and save themselves legally.

How have you unpacked .pack files to .bxon?

Pick one, releasing a patch is like releasing a tool, they can be used in any way, the consequences are up to the end user :)
