Greetings,

Does the 3ds check for updates using IP or a url?

My new 3ds will likely come with firmware version 11.0.0-33.
I'm hoping I can use a bogus dns and a hosts file on my win10 computer's mobile hotspot to only allow yls8.mtheall.com to be accessible. This solution will hopefully allow me to use the browserhax exploit without being forced to update by the browser. The solution will not work if the 3ds uses one of nintendo's ip addresses directly, skipping the dns altogether.

You can use the Tubehax DNS. Just make sure you set it before ever connecting to a network. No need for host redirection. Though if you're buying a used system you might be SOL. Also, AFAIK, only the Galaxy edition comes with 11.0, but I could be wrong.

Can anybody confirm what firmware the Super Mario 3d Land Edition ships with?

Yeah it uses domain names, not ips.
By the way, be careful not to confuse domain names and url.
The first one is simply a way to put a name on an ip address whereas the latter is an address telling you where to locate a ressource. Although urls often contain domain names, you can also find some with raw ip addresses.

Plailect's guide covers running your own update server, but it can only be used for updating to a specific firmware. It's not helpful for anyone above 9.2.

I use "hostname". I'm not sure what's most correct in this situation (hostname seems easier to type and say anyways).
