Hacking Difference between wad and wud?

Hi all I'm fairly new to Wii U hacking and am trying to figure out the difference between wad and wud files, because I've obtained both through various methods. Can someone clarify?

WUD files appear to be Wii U games, which aren't usable currently.
WADs are just WiiWare/VC that you use in Wii Mode (or sometimes other things, like IOS, system updates)

A .wad is a packaged Wii system file, a .WUD file is a Wii U Disk image

Okay thanks, the reason I'm confused is because I'm extracting using DiscU which says it accepts a .wud but I tried it with a .wad and it worked just fine.

Oh? I would expect that to work with CDecrypt, but DiscU is a surprise
