So messing around with the free games I thought I'd try a cute password seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3UyVylP7AI it caused the entire system to freeze couldn't return the home, couldn't open the VC menu, and had to hard reset. Tried it again afterwards same thing, then tried justin bailey code and it worked just fine.

Just thought I'd share for those who might try this silly pass, since it was the first thing I tried figured others might as well.

Do I spy the potential for buffer overflow exploits?

Oh god why did you have to say it.

They are going to swamp this topic, if not the section now.

I didn't know about that password, nice find.

But I don't think it will lead to anything.

    It does freeze the system

you have to press the Power button and do a Hard Reset since everything becomes unresponsive.

did you even bother to read the first post completely before posting ? It is a freeze if executed on the 3ds version.

I actually thought about that and putting this in the 3DS hacking section. Though I thought I was to noob as well and would be making a "big" deal over nothing [IMG]

also if the 3DS does get hacked with THAT password... will be hilarious!

It won't end up being that password, it'd require quite a bit of research beforehand. Heck, it might even be a dead end as there's only so much you can do with those codes.

If I am wrong, I will send you and the person who actually proves me wrong 5 bucks via paypal or something.

Otherwise I will proceed to just sort of curl up in a corner until the flood passes through.

Do ya reckon it froze the original NES system too?
Or how about the virtual console version on the wii?

Sometimes emulators are inaccurate, in that what freezes the authentic system, won't freeze the imperfectly emulated version.

This is also just like the Link's Awakening DX freeze I discovered a little while back, locks up the 3DS system too.

The inaccuracies are exactly what I'm talking about.

It's probably just going to be a freeze, I very much doubt it'll lead to hacking opportunities.
After all this isn't like the twilight hack, where instructions can be injected through a buffer overflow, there's no save data manipulation involved in freezing metroid.

If it turns out freezing the 3DS through an emulator does lead to something, better it be Link's Awakening DX since anybody can access that right now, and it's too high-profile to take down. It's not some Sudoku game.

What happens when you remove the SD card in the crash?

It says the SD Card was removed and to press the HOME button to return to the menu.
