You can have as many as you want on your SD. Use CHMM to apply your desired theme. You don't even need an official theme.

Here's what I use as template for simple themes(Static images):

(lower right corner colors are used to properly set the image in place)

edit:
also as a note, they show incorrectly on simulators on both YATA and custom theme tools but they work properly on the console

edit2:
imgur refuses to upload bmp images so these are in png format. So just convert those bmp

You can just use any theme you download and edit that. Most themes here are modified from the same official mario 3ds theme.

Are the cwavs from modifying the original theme that already had those or do we have a way to imbed them now?

This is kind of a noobish question but how do I install these themes with GW and what are the risks?
