This is what the japanese version logo looks like. In the video, you can clearly read Splinter Cell in english.

It wont exactly be user friendly unless they can run their own code.
Right now it just seems like hardware-based spoofing.

Yeap. It won't lead to anything hombrew, either. Only an exploit could lead to homebrew, and that's definitely not the case.
It's like the dvd-rom firmware flashing (c4eva) for the XBOX360. It never led to the JTAG hack. However, the KK exploid did
wink.gif

Anyway, I'm wondering whether it would be possible to have a switch on it, so that it could be used as follows: Switch position 1: The flashcart is seen as DS Cartridge, has custom (homebrew) menu in DS mode that enables you access the filesystem of the SD card (or whatever). You select which ROM to "mount" (actually flash on the internal 2/4GB memory). Then you restart the console, flip the switch to position 2, the cart is seen as the 3DS cart we have previously selected. In this way, we can still carry more than 1 games with us, although with a little bit of trouble. It would be slow, not enabling you to switch games for fun, but it would be useful when travelling. If you finish one game, you flash the next one.

I'm usually pretty skeptical but I'm going to call legitimate on this one. Legacy already managed to dump ROMs and play them back, so there's no reason why someone else couldn't.

I would assume that they still haven't managed to decrypt the ROMs though, which is where the trouble comes from for getting multiple games to work. Although the 3DS decrypts on the fly so that may be a wrong assumption, but it's a possibility.

lets face it..the demographics come down to this...

Pirates who will rejoice knowing that they can mercilessly plunder shit for free from this

People who will see this has a way for homebrew (in the future)

People who don't care about homebrew OR piracy, but the category who hopes to break free from the 3DS's fucking region lock.

what group did I miss?
the group who doesnt even know what a region lock is ^^

obviously you're talking about yourself...sooooo let me quickly explain it for you...

you're from Germany right?...this means that a Germany region lock console / handheld only lets you play games that are from Germany

games that are from America and Japan will not work...(with YOUR situation that is.)

the reason why this is such a out cry is because Americans are shunned from future japanese 3DS titles that N.A will never see due to licensing / rights nightmares...and what pisses people off more about region lock, is that they can't import it the game online and play because the NTSC (american) region locked 3DS WON'T LET THEM!!

there is no purpose or point of Region Lock, other than to have it a dick move for more power, control and domination over the consumer to say, haha. I got you...*trollface*

did I explain that well enough?
i knew it before, but anyways thanks that you would have explained it to me

So. Would this mean - in case it is true - that region lock is no more? That'd be the most important point for me since there will be some japanese games that I want to play but will probably never see a localization in the future.

I agree completely. The ONLY thing I want to come out of 3DS hacking is region-free.

And to the people that say there is no point region-locking, well, as much as I hate it too, there actually IS a reason. Licensing issues. Not all companies can publish their games in all countries, and so other companies have to publish said games for them in the countries that they can't publish in. Confusing? Well, that's business for you, but that's pretty much the deal right there. It seems that it's getting easier for this to not be such a problem these days (although places like China are still problematic) and so we are seeing more region-free devices.

The only reason why I want a flashcart now is because of bypassing region locking.

It does have it's flaws though - Like no SpotPass/StreetPass.

but who cares?

For all of those who go off on a tangent and focus on people pirating...

Many so-called pirates actually just collect the image and never even play them -- just for the sake of making a 'complete set' of which nothing will ensue -- hoarding.

Of the rest, many of them buy the games that they get a chance to experience and buy those titles they enjoy and the rest they dispose of (as you would a rental that you didn't like).

The small minority of people actually get more games than they would buy and play them all to death thus suffering job loss and living in their own feces...

Might be the case for a very small minority but most people don't like
wasting time making such a collection. I always wipe my collection and
start again so it's smaller and wiped from games I don't like.

But there will always be those who pirate Halo etc. and never play it.
They just think it makes them look cool.

It will NOT bypass the region lock on its own. Period. There would need to be an exploit to do that, or someone in the community needs to find out how to sign ROMs and modify the region (which I highly doubt we'll find out how to sign roms atm).

Theoretically if this cart works like shown it will include (but not limited to) :

- StreetPass
- SpotPass
- Wi-Fi/Wireless
- 2D/3D
- Booting commercial (only commercial) 3DS ROMs
- AP shouldn't activate with most games

Unless nintendo figures out how to detect this cart, which would probably be very difficult considering it's likely built around a commercial cart.

Unfortunately we won't see any homebrew yet -_- I know I'd love to see image editors (customized) in 3D and anti-regionlock (like mostly everyone). Putting a region lock in gives everyone another reason to hack it.

UPDATE: the team has answered our first questions. They promise that the device is legitimate (though being a new team we don't know how much credit can be given to such a claim), however it only supports 1 game at the moment - the game shown in the video. They are working on dumping other games and enabling compatibility with all commercial games. They are trying to be extremely cautious as they are afraid their device might get plagiarized by other teams. They have sent us exclusive high-res photos (see below) and have promised to unveil any further advancement directly to us. Stay tuned for more news on GBAtemp!
Wait a minute....let me get this straight. The pirates are worried about other pirates?

^ They're not pirates, they're businessmen. In China you don't create knockoffs and stuff for the glory or because people want you to, you do it because you live in fucking China and your 10 year old is putting in 10 hour shifts.

I can't remember when I said I didn't pirate, but I don't unecessarily pirate if possible (most of the time).

- I buy what NDS games I like.
- Recently deleted all my pirated music.
- ^ replacing it with actual CD's
- I own around 60 Steam games (not the cheap ones)

In general I keep pirating low but in the end I am still one
tongue.gif

Edit: And the reason I was asking why it is such a big deal is since when I am getting my 3DS
I am NOT going to invest in flashcard for it. It's always better going clean.
