ROM Hack Converting a .3DS file to .3DZ?

Ok this is probably an extremely noobish and stupid question but is changing a 3ds file to the 3dz format for online play as simple as renaming it on windows from "gamename.3ds" to "gamename.3dz" or is there a program for this? Also is it true gateway roms wont connect online unless there in the 3dz format?

Yes it's that simple. Rename .3ds to .3dz and you've "converted" it.
You will need a valid header to play online though...
