That statement means that the only type of IPSW you should use with unlocked iPhones is a custom IPSW. (Don't restore with an official IPSW from Apple.) You'll be fine if you stick with just custom IPSWs to avoid baseband updates (and the nasty error 1015).

Do keep in mind that custom IPSWs only work for restoring, not updating.

Looks like Comex's jailbreakme pdf exploit for iPad 2 on 4.3.3 got leaked, and it works.
I wouldn't use it, and I can't believe that someone would leak the work that he was developing for at least 10 months...

Yes, the iPad 2 jailbreak has indeed been leaked. Out of respect for comex (and the fact that I've seen enough people say they had to restore after jailbreaking), I will not update the guide for this yet.

7/5 EDIT: I've made a significant amount of changes. I've removed the greenpois0n and iREB tutorials since redsn0w fufills the duty of both programs. I've also made changes to the guide to try and de-clutter some stuff. I hope these changes make it easier to use the guide!

7/6 EDIT: JailbreakMe "Saffron" is now out! A write-up will be available shortly (and probably unneeded

), but may be delayed if there are significant bugs.

Hey guys.
So I have got an iPod touch 4g jailbroken with 4.2.1 . Since JailbreakMe 3.0 has been released, I was thinking about updating the firmware but I don't want to loose all the apps and save games and stuff.
So what I should first do is make a backup on itunes, perform a DFU mode restore to remove the jailbreak, update to 4.3.3 , restore from the backup to get my apps back and then jailbreak right? Wouldn't I loose all the Cydia stuff like SBSettings and all the other things or is there a way to back those up too? Any help would be much appreciated.

^ You just need to update directly (but it wouldn't hurt to back up your stuff)
When you update an iPod, all the apps and settings are preserved, and only the jailbreak and tweaks are removed (although the documents that they used remain)
After that, you can jailbreak with "Saffron", although Redsn0w still works for that device.

Last time I checked, only Greenpois0n can jailbreak the iPod 2g (MC) on 4.2.1 without restoring a custom ipsw. When you try with Redsn0w, it says that "this device isn't currently supported"

Bah, I knew there was a reason for keeping greenpois0n up.

I'll put it up again sometime before this week ends if Saffron doesn't add support for the iPod touch 2G by then.

Hmm okay. Gonna go with redsn0w instead of Saffron. So all the Cydia tweaks are removed and I would have to install them once again right? Or can I back them up like the apps?

Cydia tweaks are removed, the best way to upgrade is to uninstall most of the things you installed from Cydia then upgrade and jailbreak

I've added greenpois0n (again) and Saffron to the guide now.

A few more Saffron images will be available when I'm done at the orthodontist's.

I might've rushed through adding Saffron to the guide, so be on the lookout for little goofs! (The instructions in the tutorials should be fine, rest assured.

I added two more images for Saffron and a note explaining that you should install PDF Patcher 2 (the Cydia tweak that blocks Saffron's PDF/font exploit).

"Jailbreak responsibly, not a random store's devices" ... that sounds interesting. I wonder what they would think if someone went around jailbreaking every iPad 2 in the local Apple store...

it has been done before

you'd proberbly be forced to leave the store if they find out.

Heh, I just had a flashback of all of the Apple Store iPhones that were jailbroken with AppSnapp (the first incarnation of JailbreakMe). I feel like an old fart now.

It might become aggravating for store employees to restore the device over and over again simply because some no-good teenager jailbroke it, so please show a little courtesy and don't jailbreak display units; it's not your property, and the store sure as hell won't give you permission to jailbreak it.

(I know Apple Store display units reset themselves overnight, though.)

But if you want to jailbreak your own iPhone in an Apple Store, go nuts; you're trying out their AirPort Extremes, after all.

^ I thought Apple stores restore all their iDevices at the end of a buisness day, maybe automatically?
Anyway, they're always plugged in.

Also, the fact that Saffron is a browser based means that people can pretty much jailbreak without any background knowledge (or any knowledge at all) about the process. So if they do something wrong or misread something, they go around saying that jailbreaking bricks (which is physically impossible), that that it erases stuff, etc.
Yet, the portability is so useful, that it pretty much overweights any negetaive aspects.

Actually, the site got blocked by my school's firewall
