Code Vein - First Trailer

Bandai Namco showcased a teaser trailer for their upcoming game, Code Vein, earlier last month. Today, they've put out a new trailer, showcasing gameplay features and cutscenes. The game seems to have elements of Dark Souls styled combat in it, as well as a gritty medieval feel to it. You play as a vampire, who can absorb the powers of your enemies to gain new abilities. Code Vein will also feature a companion mechanic, where you will be assisted by a partner in battle. It's not known what system the game will release for, but it's due for release sometime in 2018.

AKA Weeb Souls.

I need to see a lot more combat before getting invested.
The combat looks...awkward. I know it's still in development, but look at the attacks when they show the combat, there's like, no weight to the hits at all. Looks too stiff to be fun, honestly. You need weighty gameplay (like Souls/BB) for it to be satisfying IMO. Hopefully that gets fixed before release.

Gambia, The
Code Vain ... the anime style NEGATIV-DARK SOULS .....
It has the basic characteristics of Dark Souls but
instead of too little storytelling, it has too much of it

I'm actually looking forward to this. I like Dark Souls, I like Anime, so lets see if I like it combined. I do however hope that English Dub voices become a thing at some point, even as DLC.

Not really sold on the combat so far, but then again, I think Dark Souls' combat is boring and repetitious. I hope this has more going for it than a copy-paste of Dark Souls combat into a different world, because I can see myself liking the game otherwise.

This looks pretty dang cool! I'd probably pick it up if it were good. Although, as Chary mentioned, the combat is way too light and quick, it's kinda weird.

I always find it odd when people directly compare a game to another, then say the game isn't as good as that game and dismiss it entirely.
How stupid can you get.
I realize comparisons can be made, but that shouldn't be your entire judgement of a game unless it is literally advertised as being "dark souls but anime guise"
Action combat has existed for much longer than Souls games, they just perfected a form of it.

Anyway the premise is certainly interesting. But definitely need to see more. From both the story/world and of course, gameplay. The very first story focused trailer isn't really a great showcase of what the game offers for gameplay.

From looking at the trailer it seems like the weight of your attacks don't impact the enemies at all. Unless that changes it might very well be a deal breaker to me.

When I read it, I was thinking Legacy of Kain meets Dark Souls. Lost interest when I saw the trailer. As everyone is saying, the attacks have no weight to them. Dude was slashing away and the enemy gave no fucks. Also looks like there's too much fantasy weird shit goin on for my taste. Probably another case of the devs doing too much and pulling off none of it on a goty level. Then again, they have another year or so to work on it.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

It does that when I edit a post.
